Career
Gerry McNeil began his career as a hockey player with the Montreal Royals , for which he was active from 1943 to 1949 in the Quebec Senior Hockey League. The goalkeeper was one of the best players in the league and was elected to the first all-star team of the QSHL in 1947, 1948 and 1949. He was also named the league's best goalkeeper in each of the three years. During his time with the Royals, he made his debut in the National Hockey League for their cooperation partner, the Canadiens de Montréal , in the 1947/48 season , in which he was used in two games. In the 1949/50 season, the Canadian played parallel for Montréal in the NHL and their farm team Cincinnati Mohawks in the American Hockey League , where he was mainly used in the AHL.
From 1950 to 1954 McNeil was a regular goalkeeper for the Canadiens in the NHL and took part due to good performance 1951 to 1953 three times in a row in the NHL All-Star Game . He was particularly convincing in the 1952/53 season , in which he led his team to the Stanley Cup victory. This season he was rewarded with the election to the Second All-Star Team of the NHL . From 1954 to 1956, the Canadian competed exclusively in his home province of Québec for the Marquis de Jonquière and his ex-club Montréal Royals. In the 1955/56 season he was elected to the first All-Star Team of the Quebec Hockey League and named the best goalkeeper in the league. In the 1956/57 season he was parallel to the game operation with the Royals behind Jacques Plante substitute goalkeeper for the Canadiens de Montréal, with whom he won the Stanley Cup for the second time in his career in nine own missions.
After McNeil was initially no longer in the NHL for the course, he ran from 1957 to 1959 for the Rochester Americans in the American Hockey League. In the Stanley Cup playoffs of the 1957/58 season he was appointed as a substitute goalkeeper again by the Canadiens. Although he was not used in the playoffs, his name was engraved on the Stanley Cup and he won his third NHL title. He then spent a year each with his ex-club Montréal Royals in the Eastern Professional Hockey League , as well as with the As de Québec in the AHL, before ending his career at the age of 35.
