The 1949/50 season was the 14th regular season of the American Hockey League (AHL). During the regular season, the league's ten teams played 70 games each. The six best teams in the AHL then played in a play-off round for the Calder Cup .
Team changes
The following changes were made before the start of the season:
- The Philadelphia Rockets stopped playing
- The Washington Lions stopped playing.
- The Cincinnati Mohawks were added to the league as an expansion team.

Calder Cup playoffs
mode
The six best teams in the American Hockey League qualified for the play-offs. In the first play-off round, the first of the Eastern Division met the first of the Western Division, as well as the two second and third within their division. The two winners from the duels between the teams in places two and three then met in the second round, while the winner from the duel between the two division winners was automatically qualified for the final by a bye . The first two play-off rounds took place in the best-of-three mode, with the two division winners playing for the finals in the best-of-seven mode. The final itself was also played in best-of-seven mode.
