The 1939/40 season was the fourth regular season of the International-American Hockey League (from 1940 American Hockey League - AHL). During the regular season, the four teams in the East Division played 54 games each, while the five teams in the West Division played 56 games each. The six best teams in the league then played in a play-off round for the Calder Cup .

Calder Cup playoffs
mode
The six best teams in the American Hockey League qualified for the play-offs. The two winners from the duels between the teams in places two to four met in the second round, while the winner from the duel between the two division winners was automatically qualified for the final by a bye . The first two play-off rounds took place in the best-of-three mode, with the two division winners playing for the finals in the best-of-five mode. The final itself was also played in the best-of-five mode.
