The 1939/40 NHL season was the 23rd season in the National Hockey League . Seven teams played 48 games each. The Stanley Cup won the New York Rangers after a 4-2 win in the final series against the Toronto Maple Leafs . Montreal's new coach Babe Siebert died before the season, before his first game. In late February, the first NHL game was televised from Madison Square Garden .
