The 1923/24 NHL season was the seventh season in the National Hockey League . Four teams played 24 games each. The top two of the regular season played the NHL final in two games for a place in the Stanley Cup final round. Here the Montréal Canadiens prevailed against the leaders of the regular season, the Ottawa Senators . There the Canadiens first prevailed against the winner of the PCHA, the Vancouver Maroons with 2-0 wins, before they also won two games against the winner of the WCHL, the Calgary Tigers and thus the Stanley Cup. This season the first award for a player was introduced. The Hart Memorial Trophy went to Ottawa's Frank Nighbor in its first year . Another Senator player was also in the history books. With only two assists, Cy Denneny became the best scorer because of his 22 goals. The top scorer of the previous and the following season also helped him. Toronto's babe Dye shocked his team with his decision to turn pro baseball. He didn't return to the ice until December and missed five games that season. He was five points short of the scoring title.
