Hart Memorial Trophy
The Hart Memorial Trophy is an ice hockey trophy in the National Hockey League . It is awarded annually to the Most Valuable Regular Season Player in the NHL by the Professional Hockey Writers' Association .
The trophy was presented by Dr. David Hart, the father of Cecil Hart, a former trainer and manager of the Montréal Canadiens . In 1960, the original Hart Trophy was replaced by today's Hart Memorial Trophy. The old Hart Trophy got a place in the Hockey Hall of Fame .
The record winner is Wayne Gretzky , who won the trophy nine times, eight of them in a row. No other athlete in the four major sports leagues in North America ( MLB , NBA , NFL and NHL) has won an MVP award more often.
Dominik Hašek is the only goalkeeper who has won the trophy twice. Only six other goalkeepers were named Most Valuable Player.
The Montréal Canadiens players have won 17 trophies, more than any other team. They are followed by the Boston Bruins with twelve awards and the Edmonton Oilers with ten trophies.
Joe Thornton was 2005/06 the first player in the history of the NHL, which was awarded during the season in which he joined the team. He played in the season for the Boston Bruins before he was transferred to the San Jose Sharks .
In 2000 and 2002 , the vote for the most valuable player was very close. Chris Pronger was only one point ahead of Jaromír Jágr in 2000 and in 2002 José Théodore and Jarome Iginla got the same number of points. Theodore eventually won the trophy as 86 journalists voted him first, compared to just 82 for Iginla.
