Elwin Ira "Al" Rollins (* 9. October 1926 in Vanguard , Saskatchewan ; † 27. July 1996 ) was a Canadian ice hockey player and - coaches , who from 1949 to 1960 for the Toronto Maple Leafs , Chicago Blackhawks and New York Rangers in played the National Hockey League .
Career
When Conn Smythe signed him for the Toronto Maple Leafs , he had already gained experience in several minor leagues. Here he was mainly active on the west coast in Seattle, Vancouver and Edmonton.
Toronto had a problem in the goalkeeping position at the time. The goalkeeper Turk Broda had been accused of being overweight and they wanted to compete with him. The two previous substitute goalkeepers were out of the running. Baz Bastien lost an eye and Doug Harvey's brother Howie had to retire due to an allergy to his goalkeeping kit.
After he played in his first season in 1949/50 as a substitute for Broda and mostly played in the AHL with the Cleveland Barons and the Pittsburgh Hornets , he made the breakthrough in the 1950/51 season . With the Leafs he won the Stanley Cup , he himself was awarded the Vezina Trophy .
For Harry Lumley he was given to the Chicago Black Hawks with some players for the 1952/53 season . Here he was awarded the Hart Memorial Trophy , although he played for the worst team in the league . The year before, he was in second place behind Gordie Howe in this election . Despite good performance, there were disputes with the general manager of the Black Hawks, Tommy Ivan , who sent him in 1957 to the Calgary Stampeders in the WHL .
He returned to the NHL for the 1959/60 season for ten games with the New York Rangers . It was followed by a few more years in the lower leagues before he ended his playing career.
In the 1970s he coached the Salt Lake Golden Eagles in the WHL. In the World Hockey Association he took over the coaching position with the Phoenix Roadrunners . There was another season with the Houston Apollos in the Central Hockey League .
