John Thomas "Johnny" Mowers (born October 29, 1916 in Niagara Falls , Ontario ; † December 7, 1995 ) was a Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper and coach who played for the Detroit Red Wings in the National Hockey League from 1940 and 1947 .
Career
During his junior years, Mowers played for the Niagara Falls Cataracts in the OHA . He remained even after the rise of the senior camp at this team until 1939, 22 years ago by the scouts of the Detroit Red Wings was discovered.
But before moving to the NHL, he first played for the Detroit Pontiacs in the Michigan-Ontario Hockey Association and the Omaha Knights in the American Hockey Association . After Tiny Thompson ended his career in the Red Wings goal, Mowers got his chance and took it. In the following three years, he only missed a single game. With the Red Wings he reached the final series of the Stanley Cup in both 1941 and 1942 . In the first year the Red Wings were clearly defeated, in the second only barely.
Even during the regular 1942/43 season, he played outstandingly and was awarded the Vezina Trophy . In the playoffs, the wings reached the final again. After two home wins against the Boston Bruins , he did not concede a goal in either game at the Bruins and thus secured the Stanley Cup victory for his team.
After this success he interrupted his career and moved to the Second World War . During this time he gained his first experience as a coach in England at Wembley Lions .
When he returned to the Red Wings for the 1946/47 season, Harry Lumley had taken over the place as a regular goalkeeper. He came to only seven missions in the season and was active from the following season in the American Hockey League at the Indianapolis Capitals as a player-coach. Back problems caused him to end his career.
