Robert F. "Bob" Sauvé (born June 17, 1955 in Sainte-Geneviève , Québec ) is a former Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who from 1976 to 1989 for the Buffalo Sabers , Detroit Red Wings , Chicago Blackhawks and New Jersey Devils in National Hockey League played.
Career
During his junior years at Laval National in the QMJHL , he played with Mike Bossy . In the 1975 NHL Amateur Draft , the Buffalo Sabers were looking for a goalkeeper and selected three goalkeepers, Sauvé was 17th in the first round, the first of the three chosen. It was followed, among other things, by Don Edwards in the fifth round. He was also one of the most interesting goalkeepers in the 1975 WHA Amateur Draft . The Cincinnati Stingers secured rights to him in the second round in 16th place.
He began his senior career in the AHL with the Providence Reds and was allowed to play in the jersey of the Sabers for four games in the 1975/76 season . For the second season, the farm team moved and now played as the Rhode Island Reds . After the other AHL farm team, the Hershey Bears , Don Edwards had been brought to the Sabers, Sauvé took over his place in Hershey. After Edwards had played almost all games for the Sabers in the previous year, it was decided after good performance in training camp for the 1978/79 season to support him through Sauvé. However, he injured his finger at the start of the season. An Edwards injury brought him back into the squad and with 29 games he was able to look back on a significant number of NHL games for the first time at the end of the season. The following year went even better when he and Edwards won the Vezina Trophy in 1980 .
For the 1980/81 season , his younger brother Jean-François Sauvé came into the Sabers squad. In December 1981 Bob was given up to the Detroit Red Wings and was there regular goalkeeper, but after the end of the season he returned to the Sabers, since Edwards had been given to Calgary. After the 1982/83 season in which he was number one in Buffalo's goal, Tom Barrasso was an outstanding young goalkeeper in the Sabers squad. Together they won the 1985 William M. Jennings Trophy .
For the 1985/86 season he moved to the Chicago Blackhawks , where he stayed as number one for two years. From the 1987/88 season he wore the jersey of the New Jersey Devils . In his sophomore year, he was ousted by Sean Burke and ended his career at 33.
The editors of the yearbook of the Buffalo Sabers 1980/81 showed great foresight. Here they reported about the birth of his son Philippe Sauvé and predicted a possible career as a goalkeeper. In 2003 he made his debut in the goal of the Colorado Avalanche and actually made the leap into the NHL.
