Gunbuster ( Japanese ト ッ プ を ね ら え! , Toppu o Nerae! For Top o Nerae ! , also known as Aim for the Top! Gunbuster ) is a six-part Japanese original video animation from the Gainax studio . Directed by Hideaki Anno , who made his directorial debut here and would later become famous with Neon Genesis Evangelion . To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Gainax, the title Top o Nerae 2! ( aka Diebuster and Gunbuster 2 ) released a sequel that takes place shortly before the two main characters return.

The title is a triple play on words with "strive to the top", "strive to the top", where Top is the name of a special unit, and as a combination the title of the tennis anime Ace o Nerae! and Top Gun , both of which have this theme.

action

In the near future, humanity will encounter giant, insect-like space monsters while traveling the galaxy. These beings want to exterminate humanity and as a result are getting closer and closer to the earth. In response to this threat, humans developed war spaceships and combat robots .

The story begins shortly after the first battle with the space monsters in 2023 and revolves around the young Noriko Takaya ( タ カ ヤ ・ ノ リ コ , Takaya Noriko ). However, although Noriko's father was a famous admiral who has been missing from one of the first battles, your own skills as a combat robot pilot are not the best. Nevertheless, together with her role model, the outstanding pilot Kazumi Amano ( ア マ ノ ・ カ ズ ミ , Amano Kazumi ), she is selected for combat use in the battle robots Buster Machine (Gunbuster) I and II, which is not least due to the fact that Koichiro “coach” Ohta ( オ オ タ ・ コ ウ イ チ ロ ウ , Ōta Kōichirō ) was a member of Admiral Takaya's team.

Together with Kazumi and Coach Ohta, Noriko comes to the warship Exelion . During one of her first missions, her father's ship is discovered, which has been flying at almost the speed of light since the battle . Still hoping to find her father alive because of the time dilation, Noriko is devastated to discover that he did not survive the fight. Kazumi, who is not convinced of Noriko's abilities, demands that coach Ohta dissolve her team shortly afterwards. Sadly , Noriko meets the pilot Smith Toren ( ス ミ ス ・ ト ー レ ン , Sumisu Toren ), with whom she then forms a new team. Shortly afterwards there is a combat mission in which the overwhelmed Noriko loses her new comrade and then falls into a depression.

After the battle, the fleet will fly back to Earth and arrive in 2032. Noriko is saddened that all of her schoolmates are grown up and have families. The fleet discovers that the space monsters are about to attack Earth again and have no choice but to fight them. At first it doesn't look good for the fleet, but when Noriko intervenes with the Gunbuster, a new kind of combat robot, the fleet can defeat the enemy. After the battle, the beings attack the earth directly and it seems as if it is lost. Coach Ohta suggests sending the decommissioned Exelion to the center of the enemy fleet and overloading its reactor to create a black hole , with Noriko and Kazumi providing escort. The plan succeeds and the attackers as well as three planets are devoured by the hole. But the effects of the following gravitational wave on the earth are also devastating; so you can see how the Australian continent is later criss-crossed by huge rifts and rifts.

The people want to strike back and invest all resources in the construction of the Buster Machine III over the next 15 years , Jupiter compressed to 1 / 30,000th, surrounded by a massive space-traveling machine the size of a quarter of the moon. The project will be completed in 2048, and Kazumi will fly the weapon to the 30,000-ship fleet in the Galactic Center, where it will meet Noriko, who is still 16. They manage to fight back the enemy, who is far outnumbered with 8 billion, but the Buster Machine III was damaged in the process. To get the chain reaction going again, Noriko and Kazumi sacrifice one of their two reactors, with which the bomb finally implodes within their Schwarzschild radius and the following black hole destroys all remaining space monsters including the galactic center. Both set out on their journey home, which takes 12,000 years because of only one available reactor, and finally, in 14,292, they arrive on earth barely aged.

Conception

Starting as an anime with a school theme and borrowing from the tennis anime Ace o Nerae! about rivalries among schoolgirls fighting for a place in an elite unit, the series quickly turns into hard science fiction. In addition to the apocalyptic scenario, the basic vehicle of the drama is the theme of time dilation, which ensures that the protagonist remains 16 years old during the entire course of the game, while the people around her age, get married and start a family and finally die, but they die from everything this remains excluded.

A special feature is that the last episode (except for the end) is kept in black and white. The drawings were realized in the appropriate gray levels and then captured on color film. In addition, the decisive battle was shown with the help of individual pencil drawings.
