Life

Early works

Anno began his career as an animator on the series Chōjikū Yōsai Macross (1982-1983), but his talent was not noticed until after the publication of Hayao Miyazaki's Nausicaä from the Valley of the Winds in 1984. Since the production studio needed more animators, an ad was placed in the Japanese anime magazine Animage . Anno responded to this ad. When he showed off some of his drawings at a meeting with Hayao Miyazaki, he was so impressed that he commissioned Anno to do some of the most difficult scenes at the end of the film.

Anno later co-founded Studio Gainax . He worked there first as animation director for the first long film and then directed Gunbuster (1988) and Die Macht des Zauberstein (1990-1991). When the NHK dismissed The Power of the Magic Stone as a remake of Miyazaki's Castle in Heaven and only a few creative tasks were assigned to him, Anno fell into a four-year depression.

Neon Genesis Evangelion

Anno's next project was the anime television series Shin Seiki Evangelion ( 新 世紀 エ ヴ ァ ン ゲ リ オ ン , internationally known as Neon Genesis Evangelion ), (1995–1996), which was to become one of the most influential and widely discussed anime. There was a return to an older style of drawing, but it was brought to a new level of precision and depth. Many suspect that Anno's long depression was the source of many aspects of the character drawing on the series. During the production, Anno often came into conflict with Japanese fans. Because of this, and for other reasons, as the plot progressed, Evangelion grew darker and more psychological. After all, Anno was not happy that his work was only broadcast on children's programs. He was of the opinion that people should be confronted with reality as early as possible. So the end runs against the narrative style and logic established in the series and the last two episodes are a journey through the thoughts and emotions of the main characters. The series was not very successful when it first aired, but was rerun on a later slot and was exceptionally popular across Japan.

After Neon Genesis Evangelion was finished, Anno received many letters from fans who congratulated him on the one hand for the work and on the other hand criticized the last two episodes. In addition to threats, these included the allegation that Anno had ruined the series for the fans. In response, two films were produced. Death and Rebirth should summarize the events of the series and present them more clearly and The End of Evangelion designed an alternative ending that still left many interpretations open.

More work

According to Evangelion, Anno directed the series Kareshi Kanojo no Jijō - Gainax's first production based directly on already finished material. When he fell out with the sponsors, the manga writer put production in the hands of Kazuya Tsurumaki . Anno then worked on some short films with Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli .

As a director he has also worked on real films such as Love & Pop (1998), Shiki-Jitsu (2000) and Cutie Honey . In 2006 he founded Studio Khara . In 2007, this produced together with Gainax the prelude to the four-part series Rebuild of Evangelion as Evangelion: 1.11 - You Are (Not) Alone. came into theaters. Evangelion followed in 2009 : 2.22 - You Can (Not) Advance. In the first film, the rebuild summarizes the beginning of the series of NGE, but in the second it goes increasingly different ways and begins to deviate from the story of the television series. Evangelion followed in 2012 : 3.33 - You Can (Not) Redo.

In 2016 he worked with his college friend and Gainax co-founder Shinji Higuchi on the new edition of the Godzilla franchise. He wrote the screenplay for the film Shin Godzilla and directed it with Higuchi.
