Roman Turek (born May 21, 1970 in Strakonice , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czech ice hockey goalkeeper who played in the National Hockey League from 1996 to 2004 for the Dallas Stars , the St. Louis Blues and the Calgary Flames and the Nürnberg Ice Tigers played in the DEL .
Career
Roman Turek was drawn in the 1990 NHL Entry Draft by the Minnesota North Stars in the sixth round (overall in 113th place). He then continued to play in the Czech league for HC České Budějovice in Budweis until he moved to the German Ice Hockey League in 1995 and played for the Nürnberg Ice Tigers , for which he played 53 games.
In 1996 he was named the best goalkeeper in the Ice Hockey World Championship and was appointed to the NHL for the first time to the Dallas Stars , which were formed when the team moved from Minnesota to Dallas. However, he got very little Ice Age at first and played mainly in the lower class IHL . In the following two seasons he was used more often in the NHL even if he was not number 1 and won the Stanley Cup with the Dallas Stars in 1999 and the William M. Jennings Trophy together with fellow goalkeeper Ed Belfour . At the beginning of the 1999/2000 season , Roman Turek was transferred to the St. Louis Blues , where he immediately made it to the goalkeeper and again won the William M. Jennings Trophy for the goalkeeper with the fewest goals. In summer 2001 he was transferred to the Calgary Flames where he was also number 1. However, he had several injuries in the 2003/04 season , which is why he only played 18 games. During the lockout in the 2004/05 season there were no games in the NHL , which is why he went back to Budweis to play at HC České Budějovice in the second Czech division. With the team of the HCCB, he made promotion to the Czech extra league in the same season.
particularities
Roman Turek is a huge Iron Maiden fan . He really wanted Eddie, Iron Maiden's "mascot", on his goalkeeper mask . In Germany he had Eddie painted on his mask and played with the mask for the Nürnberg Ice Tigers . He also played in the National Hockey League with masks on which Eddie and other symbols of Iron Maiden could be seen.
