John Gibson (born July 14, 1993 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania ) is an American ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with the Anaheim Ducks in the National Hockey League since 2014 .
Career
John Gibson began his career with the Pittsburgh Hornets U16 team , which played in a midget league. He attended Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor . In 2009 he was accepted into the USA Hockey National Team Development Program , for which he was active in the United States Hockey League until 2011 . Ahead of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft , Gibson led the North American goalkeeper rankings and was ultimately selected 39th by the Anaheim Ducks .
While Gibson was active for the USA Hockey National Team Development Program in the USHL, he initially intended to play for the University of Michigan in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association from 2011 . In the summer of 2011, he decided to join the Kitchener Rangers from the Ontario Hockey League .
Gibson has been on the Ducks' NHL squad since April 2014, but suffered a groin injury in October 2014 and was then handed over to the Norfolk Admirals , the then farm team of the Ducks in the American Hockey League , to collect match practice. Since Jason LaBarbera was injured at the same time , the Ducks signed Ilja Brysgalow as a replacement for goalkeeper Frederik Andersen .
After three shutouts and a goalscoring average of 1.62 in ten games, Gibson was named NHL Rookie of the Month for December 2015. At the end of the 2015/16 season, he and his teammate Frederik Andersen received the William M. Jennings Trophy as the goalkeeper duo with the fewest goals conceded in the league and was also elected to the NHL All-Rookie Team .
In August 2018, Gibson signed a new eight-year contract that ties him to the Californians until the end of the 2026/27 season. The average annual salary is said to be 6.4 million US dollars.
International
Gibson represented his home country at several international tournaments and two world championships. At the U18 Junior World Championships 2011 in Dresden and Crimmitschau , Gibson won the gold medal with the USA and was named the best goalkeeper of the tournament.
At the U20 Junior World Championships in 2013 Gibson was the USA's regular goalkeeper and won the gold medal with them. Personally, he achieved the best statistical values with a catch rate of 95.54% and an average goal conceded of 1.36. As a result, he was named the best goalkeeper and the most valuable player (MVP) of the tournament and was appointed to the All-Star team. At the men's world championship in the same game year , which was played in Stockholm and Helsinki , Gibson belonged to the men's national team for the first time and won the bronze medal with this.
