Braden Holtby (born September 16, 1989 in Lloydminster , Saskatchewan ) is a Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with the Washington Capitals in the National Hockey League since 2009 , with whom he won the Stanley Cup in the 2018 playoffs . He was also awarded the Vezina Trophy as the best goalkeeper in the NHL in 2016. With the Canadian national team he won the gold medal at the World Cup of Hockey 2016 .
Career
Braden Holtby began his career as a hockey player in his hometown in the junior team Lloydminster Blazers, for which he was active in the 2004/05 season in the Alberta Junior Hockey League . The goalkeeper then played from 2005 to 2009 for the Saskatoon Blades in the Canadian top junior league Western Hockey League and was elected to the All-Star Team of the Eastern Conference of the WHL in his senior year with the Blades. During his time in Sakatoon he was also selected in the fourth round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft as a total of 93rd player by the Washington Capitals . For their farm team , the Hershey Bears , he made his senior professional debut in the 2009/10 season and won the Calder Cup with his team straight away . In the same year he also came to twelve missions for the South Carolina Stingrays in the ECHL .
The 2010/11 season began Holtby with the Hershey Bears in the AHL, before he made his debut for the Washington Capitals in the National Hockey League on November 5, 2010 in the home game against the Boston Bruins . In the following period he came as the third goalkeeper behind the Czech Michal Neuvirth and the Russian Semjon Varlamow regularly to another ice age in the NHL, while he was parallel to Hershey in the AHL between the posts.
In the 2015/16 season Holtby was represented for the first time at the NHL All-Star Game and won the Presidents' Trophy with the Capitals . He achieved 48 victories in the regular season and thus set the record held by Martin Brodeur since the 2006/07 season . After the end of the season he therefore received the Vezina Trophy as the best goalkeeper in the NHL and was elected to the First All-Star Team . In the following season 2016/17 Holtby was also honored with the William M. Jennings Trophy and thus the second major goalkeeper trophy of the NHL.
In the 2018 playoffs , Holtby won the first Stanley Cup in franchise history with the Capitals .
International
For Canada , Holtby took part in the U18 World Junior Championship in 2007 , where he finished fourth with his team. In the course of the tournament he was used. At the World Cup of Hockey 2016 , the Canadian was called up to the senior national team of his home country for the first time and won the gold medal with the team, but without coming behind Carey Price and Corey Crawford .
