Dmitri Wladimirowitsch Orlov ( Russian Дмитрий Владимирович Орлов ; English transcription: Dmitri Vladimirovich Orlov ; born July 23, 1991 in Novokuznetsk , Russian SFSR ) is a Russian ice hockey player . Since February 2011, the defender has been under contract with the Washington Capitals from the National Hockey League , with whom he won the Stanley Cup in the 2018 playoffs . With the Russian national team he won the gold medal at the 2014 World Cup .
Career
Dmitri Orlov began his career as a hockey player in his hometown with Metallurg Novokuznetsk , for whose professional team he made his debut in the Super League during the 2007/08 season at the age of 16 . In his debut season he stayed in six games without a point or penalty. In the 2008/09 season he was still predominantly active for Metallurg's second team in the third-rate Perwaja League and played a total of 16 games in the newly founded Continental Hockey League for its professional team . Nevertheless, foreign talent scouts became aware of the defender early on and the Washington Capitals selected him in the NHL Entry Draft 2009 in the second round as the 55th player.
In the 2009/10 season Orlov stayed in his Russian homeland and earned a regular place in the KHL team of Metallurg Novokuznetsk, for which he scored seven points in 41 games, including four goals. In addition, he proved his scoring risk for Metallurg's junior team in the multinational junior league Molodjoschnaja Chokkeinaja Liga when he scored 32 scorer points in 24 games, including 16 goals. In the 2010/11 season , the junior national player was able to improve again in the KHL and set his point record compared to the previous year by the middle of the season. In February 2011 Orlow was signed for a try-out by the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League .
In the following seasons Orlow was able to establish himself in the NHL squad of the Capitals, but broke his left wrist at the 2014 World Cup , with the healing delayed after surviving surgery and he was only used in three AHL games in the 2014/15 season came.
In June 2017, the defense attorney signed a new six-year contract in Washington that is expected to earn him an average annual salary of $ 5.1 million. In the following year he achieved the first Stanley Cup win in franchise history with the Capitals .
International
For Russia Orlov took part in the U18 World Junior Championships in 2008 and 2009 , as well as the U20 World Junior Championships in 2010 and 2011 . In both of his appearances in the U18 World Junior Championship, he and his team took second place. In 2009 he was also voted one of the three best Russian players in the tournament. At his second U20 Junior World Championship in 2011, he won the gold medal with Russia. At the World Cup, where he was one of the two assistant captains in his team, he contributed to winning the title with one goal and eight assists. This made him the best assists of all defenders in the tournament, for which he was rewarded with the election to the All-Star Team.
In 2014 he was part of the team that won the gold medal at the World Cup . Orlow, however, was injured in the second preliminary round game. At the 2016 World Cup he was again in the Russian squad and won the bronze medal with the team, before he also represented his home country a little later at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey . Two more bronze medals followed at the 2017 and 2019 World Championships .
