Radko Gudas (born June 5, 1990 in Kladno , Czechoslovakia ) is a Czech ice hockey player who has played for the Washington Capitals in the National Hockey League (NHL) since June 2019 . His father Leo was also a hockey player and is now a coach in the Czech Republic.
Career
Radko Gudas comes from the offspring of HC Kladno , for whose U18 team he was active in the U18 extra league from 2004. In his second season in the U18 division, as a 15-year-old, he collected 29 scorer points in 51 season games and received 186 penalty minutes. This made him the most punished player in the entire league. During the 2006/07 season he received his first appearances in the U20 extra league, and he was also used in nine games at HC Berounští Medvědi in the Czech second division, the first division . From autumn 2007 he played on loan at HC Berounští Medvědi, before he made his debut in the Extraliga playoffs in 2008 for his home club in the top division . In the 2008/09 season he was used by both HC Kladno and HC Berounští Medvědi - he made a total of 14 appearances in the extra league.
In the summer of 2009, he decided to move to North America to increase his chances of a good placement in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft . With the Everett Silvertips he played in the Western Hockey League and collected 155 penalty minutes in 68 games this season. However, he was not only defensive, but also conspicuous offensively, in which he collected 39 scorer points as a defender. Therefore, he was elected to the Second All-Star Team of the WHL at the end of the season . During the NHL Entry Draft Gudas was selected by the Tampa Bay Lightning in 66th place and used by these in the American Hockey League with the Norfolk Admirals the following season . He convinced again as an offensive defender with 54 points from 76 games, where he sat in the penalty box for 165 minutes. He was also active for the Admirals in the 2011/12 season and was awarded a total of 209 penalty minutes over the course of the season. With the Admirals he won the Calder Cup at the end of the season . During the 2012/13 season shortened by the lockout , he made his debut on March 11, 2013 for the Lightning in the National Hockey League. In total, he came to 22 NHL games and otherwise played for the new farm team of the Lightning, the Syracuse Crunch . During the season he took part in the AHL All-Star Classic and at the end of the season had the best plus / minus balance of all AHL players with +32 .
In May 2013, Gudas received a three-year contract from the Tampa Bay Lightning , which was only for the NHL and brings him a total of just under $ 3 million. Due to the lockout , he was in the 2012/13 season in the squad of the farm team Syracuse Crunch in the AHL, before he was appointed to the NHL squad of the Lightning in March 2013. The following season 2013/14 he played completely for the Lightning in the NHL and marked 22 scorer points from 77 season games. In March 2015, the Lightning gave him, including a first- and third-round vote in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, to the Philadelphia Flyers and received Braydon Coburn in return . The Czech finally spent three seasons in Philadelphia until June 2019 before he was given to the Washington Capitals in exchange for Matt Niskanen .
International
Radko Gudas played for the Czech Republic at the U18 Junior World Championship in 2008 and the U20 Junior World Championship in 2009 and 2010 .
In January 2014 he was nominated for the Winter Olympics in Sochi , although he had not previously played a game for the Czech national team . In September 2016 he was supposed to be part of the Czech squad at the World Cup of Hockey 2016 , but canceled due to an injury.
