Ilya Alexeyevich Samsonov ( Russian Илья Алексеевич Самсонов ; English transcription: Ilya Alexeyevich Samsonov * 22. February 1997 in Magnitogorsk ) is a Russian professional ice hockey goaltender who since May 2018 with the Washington Capitals in the National Hockey League is under contract and in parallel for their farm team who have favourited Hershey Bears , is used in the American Hockey League . The Capitals selected him in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft in 22nd position.
Career
Ilja Samsonow began his career in his hometown in the junior department of HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk , which subsequently selected him in 34th position in the KHL Junior Draft 2014 . With the beginning of the 2014/15 season he was in the squad of the professional team in the Continental Hockey League , before he was also considered in the first round of the NHL Entry Draft 2015 as a 22nd player by the Washington Capitals . In the course of the following seasons, the Russian established himself in the KHL squad of Magnitogorsk and acted there primarily as the second goalkeeper behind Vasily Koschetschkin . At the end of the 2015/16 season he won the Gagarin Cup and the Russian Championship with Metallurg .
In May 2018, Samsonow decided to move to North America and signed an entry-level contract with Washington Capitals. There he made 37 appearances for Washington's farm team , the Hershey Bears , in the American Hockey League during the 2018/19 season . At the beginning of the 2019/20 season, the young Russian stood behind the established Braden Holtby as a substitute goalkeeper in Washington's NHL squad for the first time and made his debut in the highest North American professional league a little later.
International
For Russia , Samsonov took part in the junior division of the U18 Junior World Championship 2015 , U20 Junior World Championship 2016 and the U20 Junior World Championship 2017 and won the silver medal with his team in 2016 and the bronze medal in 2017. He made his debut for the senior national team as part of the Euro Hockey Tour 2016/17 .
