Ansan Mugunghwa FC , also known as Police FC, is a soccer franchise based in Ansan , Gyeonggi-do , South Korea . The franchise played in the K League Challenge , the second highest division in South Korea. South Korean soccer players played there during military service.

The club played in the K League Challenge from 2013 until its dissolution , before that they played in the R-League .

history

Founding period (1961–1967)

The club was originally founded in 1961 as the National Police Department FC . A year later, however, they changed their name to Seoul Police Department FC before reverting to their original name in 1967. In November 1967, however, the association was dissolved. In the meantime, the club took part in the Korean President's Cup (predecessor competition of the Korean FA Cup ), as well as in the National Korean Semi-Professional Football League (predecessor competition of the Korea National League ) until its dissolution in 1967.

Police FC era (1997-2013)

In November 1995 it was decided to re-establish the club under the club name Police FC . A contract was signed between the Korean Police and the Football Association. The signing took place on December 7, 1995. One year later, on March 29, 1996, the club was reinstated, partly with existing South Korean soccer players who were doing their military service and, like the military club Sangju Sangmu FC, serves as a club for South Korean soccer players during their military service. The club appeared from 1996 to 2000 in the National Korean Semi-Professional Football League again.

In 1998 they finished second for the first time in their history since the re-establishment. In the second half of the season they only had to admit defeat to Sangmu FC .

In 2001 they joined the then second division, the R-League . In addition to the R-League, they continued to play until the semi-professional competition was dissolved in 2002. In their first R-League season, they played in the Central League with four other teams. There they came last with only 5 points from 16 games. However, they were able to celebrate their next success in the same year in the semi-professional competition. In the first round competition they lost to Kookmin Bank FC in the final, but they were not dissatisfied with the success. In the second half of the season they reached the final again. There they met Ulsan Hyundai Mipo Dolphins FC . Although the final was lost, it was still a success to come in second. In 2002 they hardly played a role in the R-League again. They finished last with 18 points out of 20 games. In the last edition of the semi-professional competition, they were able to enter their names again in the history books of the competition. In the final of the second half of the season they met Gangneung FC . They won the final for the first time in the last event.

In 2006 the R-League was reformed a little and they entered Group B. There they finished second, 4 points behind. Police FC scored 27 points in 18 games. In 2007 they competed in Group A. There, however, they were disappointed penultimate with 19 points from 16 games. In 2008 the R-League was reformed again and they were now back in the Central League. There they were disappointed last with 13 points from 18 games. In 2009 the group system in the R-League was changed again. In the 2009 season they competed in Group A and were penultimate with 14 points from 12 games. 2010 was again very disappointing. Since you were penultimate with 14 points from 14 games.

In the penultimate R-League season 2011 they were surprisingly runner-up in Group A with 39 points from 21 games. In the last R-League season in 2012 before the K League Challenge was founded , they were even champions of Group A with 34 points. In 2013, they joined the K League Challenge and left the R-League.

In 2013 they entered the K League Challenge as a founding member. There they played for a long time for the league championship before they left a few points at the end of the season. They finished second at the end of the season, 13 points behind Sangju Sangmu FC . In their first K-League Challenge season, they also ran the Army Derby with Sangju Sangmu FC . Their first cup season since the club was founded ended very quickly. Already in the 2nd main round of the Korean FA Cup they failed 4-2 on penalties against the U-League team from Soongsil University . At the end of the season, the city of Ansan and the club announced that the club will be called Ansan Police FC from the following season and that their home games will be played in the Ansan-Wa ~ Stadium .

Ansan Era (2014-2016)

In 2014 they moved to Ansan. After Ansan's actual wish to buy Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma FC failed, they brought a replacement club to Ansan, Police FC.

Her first season in Ansan went well. At the end of the season they reached 2nd place and thus qualified for the play-off games of the K League Challenge. Here, too, they were only 11 points short of first place in the end. In the final of the play-off games they met Gwangju FC , which they lost 3-0. In terms of spectators, the season was very disappointing. In 18 home games, only 10,761 spectators watched the games. This gave them the second-worst-visited stadium in the K League Challenge. The cup season was again very disappointing. Again they failed in the 2nd main round to a lower class club. This time they failed at the Korea National League club Gyeongju KHNP FC with 2: 4 on penalties.

Your second season in Ansan was very disappointing this time. In the league they landed only 1 point ahead of the penultimate place, ahead of Chungju Hummel FC with 42 points from 40 games. In terms of spectator technology, the club was able to improve. A total of 33,298 spectators came to the stadium in 20 home games. This enabled them to threefold their average audience. The cup season went a little better this time. In the 3rd main round of the cup they met again on the University of Soongsil . This time they won the game 2-0 and thus moved into the 4th main round of the cup. There they failed, however, at league rivals Chungju Hummel FC 3: 4 on penalties.

Her third and final season in Ansan ended very successfully in the league. Before the start of the season, the club was called Ansan Mugunghwa FC. In the league they reached first place and were thus K-League Challenge champions. Since the club was not eligible for promotion, they were not allowed to move up to the K League Classic . In terms of spectators, the club was unable to match the previous year's figures again. In 20 home games only 20,093 came to the stadium. The cup season went better than expected. In the 3rd main round of the cup they met Sangji University , which they could defeat 3-0. In the 4th main round they met Konkuk University , which they could defeat 3-2 in extra time. In the round of 16 they met last year's defending champions of the cup, FC Seoul . In Seoul , however, they had to admit defeat 1: 2. In the meantime, the city announced in the middle of the season that it would end its cooperation with Mugunghwa FC at the end of the season, as the club was not eligible for promotion. Instead, a municipal club should play in Ansan. At the end of the season, the championship was still celebrated, but the club was dissolved a short time later. The municipal club Ansan Greeners FC joined Ansan Mugunghwa FC in the 2017 season .
