Asan Mugunghwa FC , was a soccer franchise based in Asan , Chungcheongnam-do , South Korea . The franchise played in the K League 2 , the second highest division in South Korea. South Korean soccer players played there during military service.

The club was founded after the dissolution of Ansan Mugunghwa FC at the start of the 2017 season and from then on served as the successor club for football players who had to complete military service.

history

founding

After the city of Ansan announced that it would found a municipal association and want to start the 2017 season with Ansan Greeners FC , the cooperation agreement between the army and the city of Ansan was no longer renewed. The Ansan Mugunghwa FC club was dissolved. After the season, the military looked for a new location for a military club and found a new location in Asan . Shortly thereafter, the military and the city of Asan signed a cooperation agreement in which the new club Asan Mugunghwa FC should compete in the second division. Song Seon-ho was signed as the club's first coach .

Song Seon-ho Era (2017)

Under Song Seon-ho, the club could not achieve direct promotion as hoped. Usually Asan was 4th or 5th placed and could never intervene in the promotion battle. Asan was only just able to prevail against Seongnam FC and Bucheon FC in 1995 in the battle for the play-off places. In the first round of the play-off games they played in the semi-finals at home in Asan against Seongnam FC and won this match 1-0 thanks to a goal in 65 minutes by Jeong Seong-min . In the final of the play-off games they faced Busan IPark . However, Asan lost this game 3-0 in Busan. Thus, Asan could not advance through the play-off / relegation games and missed their season goal. The club was able to celebrate some successes in the Korean FA Cup. In their first round they met Hanyang University , which they won 3-0. In the following round they met Ajou University at home , which they could just win 2: 1. In the round of 16 they lost to Gwangju FC with 0: 3. The club attracted a lot of attention when it made it to the round of 16. Despite the cup success, Song Seon-ho was released. Park Dong-hyeok was introduced as the successor .

Park Dong-hyeok Era (2018-2019)

Under Park Dong-hyeok, the club had a very strong league season. The club was seven points ahead of league champions and was therefore eligible for promotion. However, the South Korean military surprised the club and the association with a decision shortly before the end of the season. The military stated that they did not want to send any more players to Asan for military service. The K League Association then decided that the club should not be promoted, which is why the promotion rights therefore went to Seongnam FC . During the break of the season, the city of Asan announced that the club will compete in 2019 with players who are still drafted, but will sign players themselves. In the 2019 season, the K League gave its consent for the municipal military club, but the club received a three-year suspension for promotion due to a violation of association regulations. The 2018 season was also crowned by the successful cup season. The club stepped in their first round on the sixth division Yeoju Sejong FC , which they could beat confidently 7-0. In the following round, they faced Ansan Greeners FC, which they defeated 1-0 in extra time. In the round of 16 they then met Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors , which they surprisingly could also beat 2-1. In the quarterfinals they then had to face the Jeonnam Dragons . The game ended regularly with 1: 1. The subsequent penalty shoot-out was lost 2: 4.

Many new players were signed for the 2019 season. Despite new players, the club was unable to build on the previous season. The club was on a play-off pitch until the 23rd matchday, but could not defend or recapture it afterwards. In the end, the season ended on a disappointing 7th place. The cup season was also very disappointing. The club surprisingly lost 4-5 on penalties against fifth division Yangpyeong FC and were eliminated very early. The city of Asan announced shortly after the end of the season that the municipal-military association would be dissolved and replaced by a new municipal-provincial association. The K League approved this plan at the beginning of December 2019, which is why the new club Chungnam Asan FC will take over the league space from Asan Mugunghwa FC from the 2020 season .
