The K League 2 ( Hangul : K 리그 2) is the second highest division in South Korean football . It was introduced in 2013 as a new professional league.

history

In 2011 the K League announced that it wanted to establish a second professional league in order to expand professional sports. The K League took many steps in the following time to be able to realize the 2nd professional league. In 2012 the new members of the 2nd division were determined for the first time. With Gwangju FC and Sangju Sangmu FC at the end of the 2012 season, the corresponding relegated teams to the new 2nd division were determined.

On January 3, 2013, the K League announced the League's Official Name. Originally it was planned that the highest professional league in South Korea should be named K League Classic - and the new 2nd division simply called K League , but since the name of the 2nd division caused confusion and controversy, the league officially became the K League Challenge called. 5 years later, on January 22nd, 2018, the league was renamed K League 2 .

License condition

In order to be allowed to participate in K League 2, the K League lists the corresponding conditions as follows:

  • The club must be able to support itself financially until the end of the season
  • Association must be a city, company or army franchise
  • The clubs must be able to present football stadiums in which professional football is possible
  • Club must demonstrate professional structures in the club (coaching staff, management, etc. ...)

The clubs are also obliged to sign a minimum number of players from their own youth or university teams.

Audience numbers

The league has had a spectator problem for a long time. Clubs and fans complain about the league's very low attendance figures. In 2014 , K League 2 had its worst value with 1,211 viewers per game, while in 2017 it had its best value with an average of 2,323 viewers per game. On average, however, the league cut is around 1,500 spectators. Also in a continental comparison with other Asians-2. Leagues, the K League 2 has a very low audience appeal. Most of the fans come to the stadium on the first day of the home game and from then on, only a fraction. More spectators come to the stadium for the second division, but they cannot keep up with other second division attendance figures (e.g. J2 League : approx. 6,000).

The K League previously planned in its 2022 plan with an audience of around 7,000 in K League 2.

Economic situation of the clubs

All associations are franchises, most of them are municipal associations that belong to the respective cities. Since the clubs have owners, there is no forced profit or profit-oriented business in the league. Nevertheless, the K League tries, through z. B. the introduction of the financial fair play to bring the clubs to orderly business. Daejeon Citizen FC had more than 50 players during the 2018 season , which aroused strong criticism from fans and the association for its irresponsible management.
