The Daejeon Citizen FC was a football franchise from Daejeon , South Korea , and played (2019) in the K League 2 , the second tier of South Korea.
history
prehistory
Until the club was founded, K League games were played in Daejeon again and again. For example in the premiere year 1983 . In Daejeon Hanbat Sports Complex league games was held the K League. Four years later, Lucky Goldstar Hwangseo, a football franchise from the K League, moved to Chungcheongnam-do Province and played their home games there and in Daejeon. Until 1989, Lucky Goldstar played their games in Daejeon in the sports complex. In the years when Lucky-Goldstar played in Daejeon, there was great enthusiasm for professional football in the city, but after the club moved away and no more games were played in Daejeon, the desire to own a franchise arose.
founding
After it became known that in Daejeon, among other things, the soccer world championship was to be held in 2002 and that a new stadium was to be built for it, the city administration initiated the establishment of a franchise, which was to play in the K League, in June 1996 . On October 4th, the club was unofficially founded under the provisional name Daejeon FC . At first it was said that the club should be called Daejeon Leopard FC , because the Nasan Group wanted to enter the franchise. But after the corresponding application for the club name was rejected by the city administration, the Nasan Group got out and the city administration took over responsibility for the association. The city officially registered the club in the K League with the club name Daejeon Citizen FC and appointed their first club coach, Kim Ki-bok . At the beginning of 1997 the official founding was completed.
Early years in the K League (1997-2000)
In their inaugural season, the clubs reached a lower midfield position 7 in the league. In their premiere cup season, the club did not get far either. In the last sixteen they met the Chunnam Dragons . The game ended 2-0 against Daejeon. In their first league cup season they were also not able to record any great successes: They only achieved 8th place in the Adidas Cup and in the Prospec Cup that followed they did not get beyond the group stage. This ended their first season without much success.
In the following season, the club reached only the penultimate- 9th place in the league. With the Cheonan Ilhwa Chunma they formed the bottom of the table with 9 points behind the upper clubs. Things didn't go well in the cup either. In the last sixteen they faced Pusan Daewoo Royals . The game ended with 2: 3 against Daejeon. In the two league cups, the club was not able to record any great success. In the Adidas Cup they failed in the group stage and in the Phillip Moris Cup they only achieved a 6th place. In 1999 the club was able to improve in the league to 8th place in the table, but formed the table with Anyang LG Cheetahs and again the Cheonan Ilhwa Chunma. Also in the cup they failed again in the round of 16. At home they faced Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors , which however was again narrowly lost with 2: 3. In the Adidas Cup, the club met the Chunnam Dragons in the knockout round. However, they lost the game 1-0 and were eliminated again early on. In the subsequently held South Korean Fire Cup , they failed again in the group stage.
In the 2000 season , the club was back in the lower ranks of the league. With the Pohang Steelers and the Ulsan Hyundai Horang-i were surprisingly two good K League clubs among them. In the Korean FA Cup, however, there was disgrace. In the first main round of the cup, they met KSFL club Sangmu FC , a military club. With a goal from Lee Min, Daejeon surprisingly lost the cup game against Sangmu FC with 0: 1. The club was also not successful in the league cup. In the South Korean Fire Cup they failed again in the group stage as the last place in the knockout games and in the Adidas Cup they failed in the quarter-finals against the Anyang LG Cheetahs. The game ended 1: 1, but on penalties they were defeated 3: 4 by the Anyang team . After the end of the season, the expiring coaching contract with Kim Ki-bok was not extended, so he had to leave the club. With Lee Tae-ho , the association presented its successor.
Surprise success and shortly afterwards again only mediocre (2001-2004)
Under their new coach it did not come to the desired turn at first. In the league, the club ended the season in last place for the first time. But in the cup it came to a surprise success. In the cup, they got past their first round for the first time. They defeated Gangneung City FC 2-1 at home and then faced Anyang LG Cheetahs in the quarter-finals. They were also able to beat them 2-1. In the subsequent semifinals, they met Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors. The game ended 1-1 after 90 minutes. No more goals were scored in extra time, so they had to go to penalties against Jeonbuk. Daejeon went 4: 3 off the field as the winner and was in the cup final for the first time. In the final, they met the Pohang Steelers. With a goal in 53 minutes of play by Kim Eun-jung , Daejeon even won the cup final and thus celebrated their first club success. Despite the cup success, the team did not succeed in converting this success to other competitions. In the Adidas Cup, the club failed again in the group stage as third place.
In 2002 , the club started the season with the cup in their backs. However, it quickly became clear that they were not going to achieve great success in the league. In the end, the season ended again in last place. The cup season, however, went much better. In the round of 16 they met Incheon Korail FC , which they beat 3-0 at home. In the quarter-finals that followed, they met Ulsan Hyundai Horang-i, which they could also defeat. With goals from Kim Seong-keun , Lee Kwan-uh and Kim Eun-jung, Daejeon won the game 3-1 and made it to the semi-finals again. In the semifinals they met Suwon Samsung Bluewings . With a goal in the 81st minute of the game, shot by Seo Jung-won , Daejeon narrowly lost against Suwon with 0: 1 and was just eliminated in the semi-finals. The league cup season ended very early again. Again the club was eliminated after the end of the group stage.
Since the club could not noticeably improve under Lee Tae-ho, except for the cup victory, the contract with Lee Tae-ho was not extended. As the new coach for the season 2003 was Choi Yun-kyeom presented. Under his direction, the club was able to celebrate a remarkable 6th place in the league. Also in the cup one could record again smaller successes. In the cup, the club met Hannam University in its first round , which they beat 3-0. In the next round they met Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma FC, which they could also defeat 5-1. In the semi-finals of the cup, however, they failed to Bucheon SK with 0: 2. Daejeon also took part in the AFC Champions League 2002/03 for the first time in 2003 . In the group stage they met the Thai BEC-Tero Sasana , the Chinese Shanghai Shenhua and the Japanese club Kashima Antlers . Daejeon just failed in the group stage with a 2-0 defeat by BEC-Tero Sasana. In the second season of Choi Yun-kyeom, however, the club could not build on its previous season performance. After the end of the round two, the club ranked 11th. Despite a bad season in the league, the club was able to celebrate successes again in the cup. In their first round they faced Kyung Hee University , which they could beat 4-0. In the next round they met Suwon City FC , which they could defeat 2-0. In the quarter-finals they then met the Chunnam Dragons , against whom they could win 1-0 in extra time and thus moved into the cup semi-finals. In the semifinals they received Bucheon SK. The semi-final game ended 0-0. The subsequent penalty shoot-out was lost 4-2 for Daejeon. The club was also able to celebrate small successes in the league cup. The club finished the league cup just behind first place.
Mediocrity (2005-2010)
In 2005 the season went better again. The club finished the season in 7th place in the league - which was seen as a success in Daejeon. In the cup, however, they didn't get very far this time. In the first round of the cup they met Daegu University , which they could beat 3-1. The club then went on to play Ulsan Hyundai Mipo Dolphins in the second round , but they were eliminated from the cup on penalties with 2: 3. In the league cup you could not build on the previous season performance. The league cup season ended in 10th place. 2006 went into the season with the expectation to end the league on a single place in the table. However, this goal was missed by 2 points. The club finished the season in 10th place in the table. In the cup, too, they didn't get very far this season. In their first round, they met the second division side Seosan Citizen FC , which they could defeat 4-1 without major difficulties. In the subsequent cup round, the cup season ended for Daejeon. In the last sixteen they met Suwon Samsung Bluewings, which they lost 4-2 on penalties. The club was able to improve in the league cup. There the club finished the season in 4th place.
In 2007 they were able to achieve 6th place in the table for the first time after 2003. Nevertheless, the club had to take a damper towards the middle of the season. In June, the coach Choi Yun-kyeom left the club. Kim Ho took over on an interim basis until the end of the season. By the 6th place in the table Daejeon qualified for the first time for the championship games. In the 1st round of the championship games you went to Ulsan against Ulsan Hyundai Horang-i, against which you lost 2-0. In the cup, the club did not get past the second round again. In their first round, they faced Busan IPark FC, which they lost 2-0 at home. In the league cup they did not get beyond the group stage. 2008 turned into its worst season ever for Daejeon. The club finished the league season on a very poor 13th place in the table. There was no success in the cup either. In their first round they met Yonsei University , which they lost 3-1 on penalties and were surprisingly eliminated from the cup. In the league cup, too, the club ended the season in the group stage, as in the previous year.
For the new season 2009 , the club wanted to avoid a season like 2008. The club was in 14th place in the table until July 2009, which is why the club's management pulled the ripcord and removed Kim Ho from his position as coach. For him the co-trainer Kim Ho's Wang Seong-jae was appointed as a trainer. Under him, the club was able to improve to 9th place in the table. Things went much better in the cup too. In their first round they met Cheonan City FC , which they defeated 2-0. Then you met the Kyung Hee University, which you could also defeat 2-1. In the quarter-finals, they met their league rivals Daegu FC , over whom they were able to win 5-3 on penalties. In the semifinals, they received Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma FC. The club had to admit defeat 0: 1 after 90 minutes. In the League Cup, however, no successes could be celebrated. The club dropped out of the competition again in the group stage. However, 2010 went very badly for Daejeon. Daejeon was only among the last three teams for the entire season and accordingly ended the season in 13th place in the table. In the cup, the club could not master any big jumps either. In their first round they met again on Kyung Hee University, which they could defeat 3-1, but in the subsequent round the club was eliminated 3-0 against Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma FC. In the league cup, the club did not get beyond the group stage again.
Crash into the second division (2011-2013)
2011 again turned into a fiasco for the club. After 6 game days, the club was in 3rd place, in between even in 1st place, but the club subsequently fell into league insignificance. The club slipped further and further, so that the club held the last place in the table from the 17th matchday until the end of the season. As a result of this development, Wang Seong-jae was dismissed as a coach and temporarily replaced by Shin Jin-won . But even he could not turn the trend, so that he was replaced a month later. The club introduced Yu Sang-cheol as the new coach . However, there was a small ray of hope in the cup. Despite poor performance in the league, the club won 3-0 in their first round of the cup against Gimhae City FC . Then you went to the round of 16 against Gangwon FC , which you lost on penalties. In the last league cup season again did not get beyond the group stage. In 2012 it was all about staying up for the club. The club was on a relegation zone again and again until the 26th matchday, before the club was able to free itself from the relegation zone. In the end, they were 5 points ahead of the relegation zone in 13th place. The club didn't get far in the cup either. In their first round they met Gyeongju Citizen FC from the K3 League , which they defeated 2-1 with a lot of effort and hardship. The club then met league rivals Sangju Sangmu Phoenix FC , who were beaten 4-2 on penalties. In the quarterfinals, however, the club failed to Jeju United FC with 1: 2. For Yu Sang-cheol, Daejeon was over after this season and the contract with him was no longer renewed. Kim In-wan was introduced as the new trainer .
For the club, it was again only about staying up in 2013. However, the club was only relegated from the 4th to the 7th matchday. The club reacted in October to the persistently poor season performance and fired him. Jo Jin-ho was introduced as interim trainer . However, Jo Jin-ho could no longer prevent relegation himself, so that the club had to go to the 2nd division for the first time . In the cup, the club was surprisingly eliminated in their first cup round. The club surprisingly lost the game against Goyang Hi FC 0-1.
New beginning and renewed relegation (2014-2016)
The club reacted to the relegation season and was promoted as a season goal. Furthermore, Jo Jin-ho was appointed coach by the club's management. Jo Jin-ho signed Adriano, a hitherto unknown striker who turned out to be a stroke of luck. Adriano scored 27 goals throughout the season and made a significant contribution to promotion. The club finished the season 11 points ahead of the 2nd place and was therefore able to take note of the 2013 season as a slip-up. In the cup, the club was again able to record minor successes. The club won 2-1 in their first round of the cup against Mokpo City FC . In their second cup round, however, Daejeon had to admit defeat 1: 2 at home to FC Pocheon . After the recovery, the club wanted to keep the class. However, the club was on the bottom of the table from the 2nd match day and could hardly get any points. Around June 2015, Adriano, their most important player, left the club. In May 2015, the club's management dismissed Jo Jin-ho and temporarily appointed Korean-Canadian Kim Michael as coach. But even he could not achieve the trend reversal, so that he too was quickly remedied of the post. Choi Mun-sik took over the coaching post in June of the same year. By the end of the season, however, he could not achieve a turnaround either, so that the club finished the league in 12th place with 19 points from 38th games and directly relegated back to the 2nd division. In 2015 Daejeon did not get beyond the 3rd main round. In their first round of the cup, they met Hannam University , which they could beat 3-0. In the next round, they met Yongin City FC , which they defeated 1-0 at home. In the round that followed, they met again on Jeju United FC, but they were again defeated 1: 2 at home.
In 2016 , the club's management issued the resurgence. However, the club did not play for promotion throughout the season. The club clearly missed the target and ended the season in seventh place. The club was able to celebrate minor successes in the cup. In their first round they met again on Yonsei University, which they could beat 3-0 this time. Then the club met Suwon FC , who could also be beaten 2-1. In the last sixteen, the club was knocked out at Incheon United FC with 2: 3. After the season goal was missed by far, the contract of Choi Mun-sik was not renewed again, so he had to leave. The association introduced its successor, Lee Yeong-ik .
Attempted return to the upper house of the league (2017-2018)
Under Lee Yeong-ik, the promotion should be successful, but this time the club never played for promotion. The club ranked from the 11th match day on the last table place 10 and stayed there until the end of the season. Smaller successes, however, could be celebrated again in the cup. Daejeon narrowly won against Cheonan City FC 1: 2 in their first round. Then the club met in their second cup round on the Gangwon Catholics Gwandong University , which they could also beat 2-0. In the round of 16 failed, however, the club to the Jeonnam Dragons. The cup game was lost 1: 2.
After Kim Jong-hyeon could not successfully inherit Lee Yeong-ik, who had been released in the meantime, a new, inexperienced trainer was hired with Ko Jong-su . With 58 players, the club had the largest squad in K League history in 2018. The club played only in midfield for a long time in 2018 before the team stabilized and they could fight their way up to 4th place. In the end they finished the regular season in 4th place. In the subsequent play-off games they beat Gwangju FC 1-0. In the play-off final they met Busan IPark FC, against which they lost 3-0. In the cup, the club retired for the first time in a few years in their first cup round. Daejeon lost against the meanwhile renamed club Seongnam FC with 0: 1.
