history

Yonsei University goes back to the two universities of Yonhi University and Severance Medical College. Severance Medical College has its origins in the first hospital in Korea founded in 1885 . Yonhi University emerged from a Christian college founded in 1915.

Severance Medical College

Gwanghyewon Hospital, built in 1885 on the Sinchon campus

In 1885, King Gojong commissioned the royal court physician Horace Newton Allen - an American missionary from the Presbyterian Church ( American Northern Presbyterian Church ) - to build the first modern hospital in Korea . In April 1885 the Kwanghyewon Hospital ( Kor. 광혜원 , 廣 惠 院 ; dt. House of Extension of Grace) opened.

On March 29, 1886, 16 selected students were accepted at the hospital, which was now called Jejungwon ( 제중원 , 濟 衆院 ; House to Rescue the People), and their medical training began. This medical school is the origin of Yonsei University and the first modern medical training facility in Korea.

After the Canadian OR Avison, previously a medical professor at the University of Toronto , took over the management of the hospital, in 1904 he built a new hospital with the name Sebeuranseu Byeongwon ( 세브란스 병원 , 세브란스 醫院 ; Severance Hospital) and with a donation from the American LH Severance at the same time the teaching institution Sebeuranseu Euihak Jeonmunhakgyo ( 세브란스 의학 전문 학교 ; Severance Medical School). In 1908, the first seven students received their first doctoral degrees and medical permits in Korea. In the following years the name changed several times: 1909 in Sarib Sebeuranseu Uihakgyo ( 사립 세브란스 의학교 , Private Severance Medical School), 1913 in Sarib Sebeuranseu Yeonhab Uihakgyo ( 사립 세브란스 연합 의 학교 ; Private United Severance Medical School) and 1917 in Sebeuranseu Yeonhab Uihak Jeonmunhakgyo ( 세브란스 연합 의학 전문 학교 ; United Severance Medical School).

As early as September 1906, a professional nursing school was founded within Severance Hospital. The first nurses completed their training in 1910.

In 1942 the college was renamed Asahi Igakku Senmongakkō ( Japanese 旭 醫學 專門 學校 ; 아사히 의학 전문 학교 ; Asahi Medical School) at the instigation of the General Governorate of Chōsen . The name was retained until Chōsen became independent from Japan in 1945. In 1947 the school received approval for a six-year medical college called Sebeuranseu Uigwadaehak ( 세브란스 의과 대학 ; Severance Medical College).

Since 1949, the medical preparation courses were no longer held in Severance Medical College, but in the College of Science and Engineering at Yonhi University.

During the Korean War , Severance Medical College and Hospital were moved to Busan in 1951 , and a humanitarian hospital was established to provide medical care for refugees. After the war ended in 1952, Severance Medical College and the hospital moved back to Seoul.

In 1968 the nursing school, founded in 1906, was expanded into a college .

Yonhi University

The Underwood Hall

In March 1915, Chōsen Kirisutokyō Gakkō ( 朝鮮 基督教 学校 ; 조선 기독교 학교 ; Christian School Chōsen) opened, the first private college in Chōsen Province. The college was founded by HG Underwood. The foundation was jointly supported by a Presbyterian congregation in New York, a Methodist mission group and a Presbyterian mission group from Canada. Located in the YMCA building in Seoul, the college consisted of five departments: Humanities, Theology, Economics, Mathematics and Physics, and Agriculture.

In April 1917 the college was renamed in Shiritsu Enki Senmongakkō ( 私立 延禧 專門 学校 ; 사립 연희 전문 전문 ; Enki Private Technical School); The Japanese Kanji of the name "Enki" ( 延禧 ) are pronounced in Korean Yonhi, which is the reason for the name component that has been preserved to this day. Applied chemistry has been added to the five departments. In the same year, with the help of a donation from John T. Underwood, the brother of HG Underwood, the area of today's campus in Keijō was acquired. One of the first buildings, Stimson Hall, was built with the estate of Charles Stimson. The first graduates left the technical school in 1919. In 1923, the designation in Enki Senmongakkō ( 延禧 專門 学校 ; 연희 전문 학교 ; technical school Enki) was modernized by a new decree in educational policy .

In April 1944, the college was dissolved at the instigation of the General Government of Chosens, since the college was "property of the enemy". The Korean-born employees and professors were fired and the college was renamed Keijō Kougyō Keiei Senmongakkō ( 京城 工業 經營 專門 學校 ; 경성 공업 경영 전문 학교 ; Keijō Technical School for Industrial and Business Administration) and continued to operate as such.

After Chosen's independence from Japan , preparations were made to expand it into a full university. On Independence Day 1946, the Yonhi Daehakgyo ( 연희 대학교 , 延禧 大 學校 , Yonhi University) opened with four departments (humanities, economics, natural sciences and theology) and eleven departments. Yonhi University was open to both men and women, making it the first mixed South Korean university.

From 1949 the Severance Medical College preparatory courses were held at Yonhi University. The first graduates left Yonhi University in 1950. Also in 1950, the departments were converted into colleges. The range of courses was expanded to include law, pedagogy, biology, electrical engineering, industrial chemistry and a medical preparation course to 17 subjects, and a graduate school was set up.

She was transferred to Busan during the Korean War . In 1953 the university moved back to Seoul.

Yonhi University was constantly expanding: in 1954 a new college for political and legal studies was established. In 1955 a church music department was established in the College of Theology.

Yonsei University

In the year the board members of the foundations of both universities Severance Medical College and Yonhi University agreed to form a joint body. On January 5, 1957, the two universities merged and chose Yonsei University ( 연세대 학교 , 延 世 大 學校 ) as the new name of the university.

In 1959, the Korean Language Institute was established making it the first university to offer Korean language programs. As a result, Yonsei's Korean programs and teaching materials enjoy a high reputation. In 1977 the second campus was opened in Wonju . In the same year, Korea's largest telescope was built at Yonsei University . In 1981 the Wonju campus was expanded to become Wonju College with 10 departments and in 1986 Korea's first graduate school for international studies was opened.

During a student demonstration in 1987, a student died from a tear gas cartridge fired by the police. This accident sparked the June democracy movement, which ended with the approval of President Roh Tae-woo for a presidential direct election .

In 2003 the Kim Dae jung Library, named after the eighth president, opened .

In 2006 the property in the free economic zone was acquired by the city of Incheon . With the establishment of the College of Pharmacy, the new International Campus opened in 2010.

The university library consists of the central library on the Sinchon campus and three further departmental libraries. Sinchon has 2 million individual tapes.

Academic institution

As in all South Korean universities, the course at Yonsei University is based on the Anglo-Saxon three-cycle system and thus offers Bachelor , Master and doctoral degrees .

The academic facility is divided into two levels, responsible for undergraduate and postgraduate studies. The undergraduate degree (bachelor's degree) is offered by the colleges. The Graduate Schools are responsible for higher academic degrees or postgraduate studies (master's and doctoral programs).

Yonsei University operates three campuses. Since the campuses run independent student selection processes, they have independent academic structures.

Like the rest of Yonsei University, education in the graduate schools is based on Christian values. The Graduate Schools are designed to train Korea's future leaders with the aim of serving the world community. You should learn to create “creative academic results through scientific and critical research methods”. Since its inception, Yonsei University's graduate schools have awarded approximately 6,000 doctoral and 26,000 master’s degrees.

Graduate school

The Graduate School, or General Graduate School, is the traditional institution responsible for general Masters and PhD programs.

In a total of 99 courses, almost all Bachelor courses are continued. The master’s courses in the Graduate School are consecutive and accordingly largely correspond to the bachelor’s courses organized by the colleges. The master’s courses are designed as their scientifically in-depth programs.

The Graduate School is divided into 77 departments. Since the Graduate School is administratively equal to the College, there is no intermediate level between the Graduate School and the Department. But in order to have an overview of this large number of departments, they are unofficially divided into six scientific areas (analogous to the colleges):

  • Liberal Arts and Social Science
  • Natural Science
  • Engineering
  • Art and Physical Education
  • Medical science
  • (Interdisciplinary courses)

In addition to the 77 standardized study programs, the Graduate School offers 23 interdisciplinary study programs and 24 programs in cooperation with other South Korean research institutes.

Special graduate schools

In addition to the conventional Graduate School, there are nine Professional Graduate Schools and eleven Special Graduate Schools that have been set up for special purposes.

The symbol of Yonsei University

The Yonsei University emblem consists of a circle with a shield in the center . The sign shows a circle ("ㅇ") at the top, a bar ("-") in the middle and a roof ("ㅅ") at the bottom. The characters “ㅇ” and “ㅅ” are taken from the initial characters of the two syllables of the university name 연세 . The circle “ㅇ” symbolizes the ideal of a person with a perfect personality and a versatile personality. The roof “ㅅ” represents the upward striving for scientific excellence. In addition to these meanings, the “ㅇ” symbolizes the sky, the “-” the horizon and the “ㅅ” the people, based on the Chinese character . To the left of the "ㅇ" is an open book that stands for the truth. To the right of the "ㅇ" there is a torch that stands for freedom.
