Luis Ruiz

Luis Ruiz Suarez SJ , also Cantonese language : 陸毅 神父 (Luk Ngai), (born September 21, 1913 in Gijón , Asturias ; † July 26, 2011 in Macau ) was a Spanish Jesuit and missionary . He was known as the "Angel of Macau".

Life

Luis Ruiz joined the religious community of the Society of Jesus in Salamanca in 1930 after attending school with the La Salle brothers in Cimadevilla . After the dissolution and expulsion of the Jesuit order in Spain in 1932, he studied humanities and philosophy in Marneffe, Belgium. In 1937 he took over the management of the Jesuit college Colegio de Belén in Havana , Cuba , where one of his students was Fidel Castro .

From 1941 he worked in China , interrupted by the Second Sino-Japanese War , where he studied Chinese and theology. In 1945 he was ordained a priest there and was an English teacher in Anking . After the victory of Mao Zedong and Chiang Kai-shek in the Chinese civil war from 1945 to 1950 and their seizure of power in 1951, he was imprisoned and deported via Hong Kong to the Portuguese colony of Macau after contracting typhus . After Macao was incorporated into the Chinese People's Republic in 1969, he stayed illegally. In 1970 he founded Caritas Macao.

Luis Ruiz founded the "Casa Ricci Social Service CRSS" in 1984 and was head of the social facility until 2002. Casa Ricci looks after leprosy villages in China , Vietnam and Myanmar and is involved not only in health care but also economically for the families affected. In recent years Luis Ruiz has also focused on those infected with HIV and AIDS .

He was awarded the Medal of the Order for Civil Merit of the Government of Macao, the Knight's Cross of the Spanish Order de Isabel la Católica and the Portuguese Order of Merit for his commitment .
