Wonju is a South Korean city. It is the most populous city in the north-east of Gangwon Province .
Wonju is bordered by Hoengseong County to the north and Yeongwol County to the east , both of which are also part of Gangwon Province. The city borders on Gyeonggi Province to the west and Chungcheongbuk Province to the south .
There are three universities in Wonju: Sangji University and the private Halla University and Yonsei University (second campus next to Seoul).
history
The city was founded in 678 as Bugwongyeong ( 北 原 京 ), and in 940 it was renamed Wonju. In 1395 it became the administrative seat of Gangwon Province and remained so until the administrative division was reorganized in 1896, when Chuncheon became the new provincial capital.
Korea was part of the Japanese Empire between 1910 and 1945 . Since Japanese was the national language at that time, the city name 原 州 was read Genshū in Japanese .
