Dal Joon Lee
Dal Joon Lee (born May 30, 1939 in Wonju (South Korea), † September 19, 2010 ) was an American table tennis player . He participated in four world championships in the 1960s and 1970s .
Career
Dal Joon Lee was the son of wealthy parents who perished during the Korean War. He soon began to play table tennis and achieved considerable skill levels through intensive training. First he performed under the flag of South Korea. In 1960 he was second at the Asian Championships in singles behind the Japanese Ichiro Ogimura . Previously, he had prevailed against the Japanese Nobuya Hoshino (16th in the world rankings) and Teruo Murakami (WRL 4th place). At the Asian Games in 1962 he reached the final in the team competition. In 1964 he became the national South Korean champion. Then he emigrated to the USA.
From 1968 to 1973 he won the open American championship six times in a row. From 1969 to 1975 he was nominated for all four world championships , but never came close to medal ranks. In the mid-1960s, he and Richard Bergmann showed exhibition fights for the Harlem Globetrotters . In 1983 he was inducted into the United States' Table Tennis Hall of Fame.
In the 1977/78 season he was active in Germany at TSV Selk .
Private
Dal Joon Lee married Linda Williams in 1967, with her he had a son (* 1968). In 1975 he got a second marriage with the South Korean table tennis player He-Ja, who played for the German Bundesliga club TSV Kronshagen in the mid-1970s and took part in the 1979 World Cup. From this marriage there were three children.
