history

prehistory

Gwangju Sangmu Bulsajo logo until 2010

In 2003 the city founded the military association Gwangju Sangmu Bulsajo FC in cooperation with the military .

Between 2003 and 2010, however, the club could not celebrate any success. In 2010 the contract was not renewed and the military association was dissolved. The military left the city and the city administration founded its own association. Choi Man-heui was signed as the first coach of Gwangju FC .

First years and relegation to second class (2011-2013)

The first two seasons did not go well for the club. In 2011 they were 11th, but in 2012 they were 16th, which is why they competed in the newly founded K League Challenge in 2013 . The first two cup seasons were different. In their first cup season they surprisingly lost 2-1 in their first round against Suwon City FC . In 2012 the cup season went better. In their first round they met Chungju Hummel FC , which they defeated 4-2. In the following round, however, they failed 3-1 to the Pohang Steelers . After the club was relegated from the K League in late 2012, Choi Man-heui was dismissed as a coach and was replaced by Yeo Beom-kyu .

In 2013, Yeo Beom-kyu should be promoted again, but the club could not participate in the promotion battle at any time. In between, they finished 7th, which is why Yeo Beom-kyu was also on leave in the middle of the season. Nam Ki-il was hired as an interim trainer . Under him, the club was able to stabilize and still reach 3rd place. The club could not achieve much in the cup either. In their first round they met again on Chungju Hummel FC, which they could defeat again. They won the game 3-2. In the following round, however, the club met FC Seoul , which they beat 2-1, which is why the club was eliminated after their second round.

Promotion and establishment in the K League Classic (2014-2016)

In 2014 the interim trainer Nam Ki-il was appointed the official successor trainer. Under him, the club should achieve promotion. The season was again unsteady. In the first half of the season, the club ranked in the lower part of the table, but was able to stabilize in the second half of the season and at the end of the season still reached 4th place and thus the play-off games. In the play-off games, they beat Gangwon FC 1-0. In the play-off final they met Ansan Police FC , which they also beat 3-0 and thus reached the relegation games. The first leg they won against Gyeongnam FC 3-1 and the second leg went 1-1, which is why the club returned to the first division. In the cup, the club reached the second round again. After beating Bucheon FC 1-0 in 1995 , they met Seongnam FC , which they lost 2-1 and were eliminated in the cup.

In their promotion season they played almost only in the lower table region. The club was in the upper part of the table until the 5th matchday, after which it continuously slipped down to 10th place. At the end of the season, the relegation was never in danger due to the poor performances of Daejeon Citizen and Busan IPark , so that you could start planning for the next season very early. The cup season was similar. In their first round they met Daejeon Citizen, which they had just lost 0: 1 and were eliminated very early. In 2016 the club started the season mixed. While you were in 3rd place after two match days, you slipped down to 9th place in between before you could fight your way back to 7th place. Still, the club finished the season only on an 8th place behind Suwon Samsung Bluewings . The cup season, however, went a little better again. After they surprisingly beat Jeju United 2-1 in their first round , they failed to Ulsan Hyundai and lost the game 0-1.

Relegation and new beginning in K League 2 (present)

Gwangju FC had to cope with a few departures from top performers after the end of last season, but they stayed on the relegation place until matchday 10. After that, the club slipped to the relegation place and shortly afterwards even to the relegation place. After a series of defeats, Nam Ki-il had to leave the club and Kim Hak-beom took over as his successor. Despite the change of coach, no mood could be created and the club lost more games. At the end of the season, the club was able to surprisingly win two games in a row, but this was no longer enough to prevent relegation. Gwangju was relegated 4 points behind and Kim Hak-beom was also dismissed from the club shortly afterwards.

Gwangju FC repositioned itself almost completely for the 2018 season. Almost the entire squad left the club, but young players were committed. With Park Jin-seob, the club signed a successor coach for the 2018 season. Despite a new squad, the club left very early. In their first round, the club surprisingly failed to the third division side Daejeon Korail FC with 1: 3.
