The Korea National League was the semi-professional football league of South Korea. It was the third highest division in South Korean football . In 1964, the Korea Semi-Professional Football League, the predecessor competition, was launched. This league was the top division until 1982, before the K League, a new professional competition, was launched in 1983 and replaced the semi-professional league as the top division. The league existed from 2003 to 2019.
In 2000, the KFA examined the establishment of a new second division. In 2002 the association announced the establishment of a new semi-professional league, the K2 League . In 2003, the newly founded association held the semi-professional championship for the first time. In 2006 the league was renamed the Korea National League . The league was dissolved at the end of 2019 and its 8 member clubs were integrated into a new K3 League and K4 League with the 20 clubs of the K3 League .
history
In 2003, the KNL was integrated into the football system of South Korea as the second league stage. The idea behind the foundation was that professional players who hardly got a chance in the K League should get match practice in the KNl. From 2003 to 2006, the association carried out the league championship under the name K2 League . Goyang KB Kookmin Bank FC became the first KNL champion .
In 2006 the association renamed the league the Korea National League . From 2006, according to the plans of the associations, the masters of the KNL should rise to the K League. The championship final at that time was played between Goyang KB Kookmin Bank FC and Gimpo Halleluhja . Goyang won the championship final. After the championship finals, the club refused promotion to the K League due to the financial requirements for the K League. The association punished the club with a 20 point deduction, which was divided between the two rounds. In 2007 a new club won the league championship with Ulsan Hyundai Mipo Dolphins FC , but this club also refused promotion for the same reasons as with Goyang. The club's rejection of promotion to the K League caused great criticism from players and fans.
As a result of the two failed ascent, the KFA announced that it would found a commission to reorganize the ascent. Before the start of the 2008 season, the KFA decided to completely abolish the promotion regulation and instead want to found a new second professional league.
In 2008, 14 teams took part. In the second half of 2009, Hongcheon Idu FC left the league for the first time for financial reasons. In 2010, however, two new clubs joined with Yongin City FC and Mokpo City FC , so that the league was held for the first time with 15 teams. In addition, the foreign player system was introduced to engage foreign players. Ulsan Hyundai Mipo Dolphins FC then signed two Brazilian players, making them the first foreign players in the league. In 2011, Yesan FC left another club. The league was then played with 14 teams instead of the original 15 teams.
In 2013 the new second professional league was founded with the K League Challenge . At the end of 2012, three members of the KNL left the league with Chungju Hummel FC , Suwon City FC and Goyang Hi FC in the direction of the second professional league. With Goyang KB Kookmin Bank FC, a KNL club was also dissolved, so that the league had to record four club withdrawals. At the end of 2016, the number of members decreased from 10 to 8 clubs due to the dissolution of Yongin City FC and Ulsan Hyundai Mipo Dolphins FC.
In 2017, the association changed the championship regulations so that only the best 3 teams qualify for the championship games.
