The R-League is the reserve league of the professional clubs from the K League in South Korea .

history

They completed their first season in 1990 with the member clubs of the K League . The former members of the league were: POSCO Atoms , Hyundai Horang-i , Yukong Elephants , Daewoo Royals and Lucky-Goldstar Hwangso . POSCO Atoms won the first title, two points ahead of Yukong Elephants. The league was then dissolved again and the clubs sent their reserve teams to the semi-professional league of the National Football Championship .

In 2000, the league began operations with two new seasons. 9 teams competed against each other in the Central League (Group A) and the Southern League (Group B).

In 2001 the reserve team of Police FC joined the league before the reserve team of Gwangju Sangmu also joined the league in 2002 .

By 2009, 13 out of 15 franchises had sent their reserve teams to the R-League with the non-K-League member Police FC. Only Gangwon FC and Jeju United did not send reserve teams to the R-League.

Since a new league was founded in 2013 , the number of members of the R-League was reduced in 2012. From 2013 to 2015 the R-League was not played. For the 2016 season, K-League members declared that they were interested in holding it again.
