The Minerva Hills National Park ( English : Minerva Hills National Park ) is a national park in the east of the Australian state of Queensland .

location

The park is located 626 kilometers northwest of Brisbane and 60 kilometers south of Emerald , on the Dawson Developmental Road and Gregory Highway .

The Snake Range and Albinia National Park are in the vicinity .

history

The area around Springsure was inhabited by the Aboriginal tribe of the Kariai , which can still be seen today in stone figures and rock carvings .

National nature

The park encloses the two ancient volcanoes Mount Barrambool and Mount Zamia . Particularly well-known is the Virgin Rock on Mount Zamia, which, viewed from Springsure, is reminiscent of Mary, the Mother of God, who weighs her child. At night the Virgin Rock is floodlit.

flora

The mountain slopes are covered with light, grassy forest. Mountain coolibah ( Eucalyptus coolabah ), silver-leaved ironbark ( Eucalyptus melanophloia ) and gum-topped bloodwood ( Corymbia stockeri ) tower above macrozamia and grass tree species. In the protected valleys at the foot of the precipices there is dry rainforest , in which fig tree species, stinging tree (a dendrocnid species with stinging hairs) and sticky seed species grow. Blue grass meadows with acacia species predominate on the mountain peaks .

Facilities and access

Camping in the park is not permitted. There is a landscaped hiking trail from the parking lot to the Skyline Lookout (1.6 km), from where you have a good view to the south of Mount Zamia with Virgin Rock , as well as the town of Springsure. There are also a number of other viewing areas with picnic facilities.

Minerva Hills National Park is located directly west of Springsure. Follow Dawson Developmental Road west for four kilometers and then turn north on Dendle Drive . The car park is reached after a further three kilometers.
