National nature

The park was designated on June 19, 1909, making it the first national park in northern Queensland. The Millstream, a tributary of the Herbert River , forms here with the Great Millstream Falls the widest, single-tier waterfall in Australia.

The falls owe their origin to volcanic activity 3 to 1.2 million years ago when the area was covered by three lava flows in several eruptions . The oldest, 3 million years ago, is visible today at the bottom of the valley, the youngest, 1.2 million years ago, is found on the upper slopes of the valley. The three lava flows are visible at the Great Millstream Falls.

Flora and fauna

Due to the location in the rain shadow of the Great Dividing Range , the vegetation is characterized by open, dry eucalyptus forests . They are home to numerous mammals, frogs, reptiles and over 160 species of birds.
