The Frankland Group National Park (English: Frankland Group National Park ) is a national park in the northeast of the Australian state of Queensland . The Frankland Group consists of five islands. These are Russell Island, High Island, Normanby Island, Mabel Island, and Round Island .
location
It is 1,353 kilometers northwest of Brisbane and 45 kilometers southeast of Cairns , 10 kilometers off the coast.
The Russell River , Gray Peaks , and Fitzroy Island National Parks are in the vicinity .
Terrain forms
All islands are made of weathered sedimentary rock . They are part of a coastal mountain range that was inundated by the sea 6,000 years ago. Around the islands there are coral reefs with hard and soft corals.
Flora and fauna
The rocks are covered with a good mix of tropical rainforest and coastal heather. Mangrove forests can be found in the mudflats .
Many different water birds nest on the islands, but also two-colored fruit pigeons , other fruit pigeons, various honey-eaters and white-bellied swallowstar ( Artamus leucorynchus ).
history
For the local Aboriginal tribes of the Mandingalbi, Yidinji and Gungandji , the islands had a special meaning, as they gathered there, fished and hunted together.
Lieutenant James Cook named the islands after Sir Thomas Frankland , a lord of the British Admiralty and his nephew of the same name, in 1770 . A lighthouse was built on Russell Island in 1929 and it was declared a Commonwealth Island . The other islands were incorporated into a national park in 1936, to which Russell Island also belonged from 1994.
Access and facilities
The islands can only be reached by private boats.
Camping in the park is only permitted on Russell Island and High Island . But there are hardly any special facilities. There is a 1 km circular walk on Normanby Island .
