The Danbulla National Park (English Danbulla National Park ) is a 81 km² - together with the state forest of the same name even 120 km² - large national park in Queensland , Australia . Since 1988 it has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site Wet Tropics of Queensland because of its natural beauty, biological diversity , evolutionary history and as a habitat for numerous endangered animal species . The park is also part of the Wooroonooran Important Bird Area , which is home to numerous endemic bird species. It is characterized by lush rainforest , crater lakes and historical sites.

The national park is named after the place Danbulla. In its heyday from the beginning of the 20th century until the Second World War , up to 200 people lived here. Characterized by dairy and forestry, the community experienced its decline when the easily accessible forest was cleared at the beginning of the 1950s and the yields on the barren soils decreased.

location

The park is located in the center of the Atherton Tablelands and is approximately 20 km northeast of Atherton and 35 km southwest of Cairns . It borders directly to the north on the Dinden National Park and to the east on the Gadgarra National Park . The eastern access road branches off at Lake Barrine from Gillies Highway from. From the west, the park can be reached from the Kennedy Highway via Danbulla Road via Kairi and Tinaroo . It runs along Lake Tinaroo , the first large artificial lake in Queensland, which has dammed the Barron River since 1958 and is primarily used for irrigation in agriculture.

Attractions

The landscape in the Atherton Tablelands has a turbulent volcanic past. The granite mountains north of the Tinaroo Dam are around 260 to 270 million years old. The Maar Lake Euramoo , on the other hand, was only formed around 10,000 years ago; the unusual dumbbell shape, instead of the usual circular shape of a maar, is the result of two, possibly simultaneously, collapsed volcanic craters.

In the Danbulla National Park you can find eucalyptus , acacia and the particularly valuable highland rainforests.
