The Goold Island National Park (English: Goold Island National Park ) is a national park in the northeast of the Australian state of Queensland .

location

It is located 1,250 kilometers northwest of Brisbane and 25 kilometers northeast of Cardwell off the northern tip of Hinchinbrook Island .

history

Before the arrival of the Europeans, this area was inhabited by the Bandjin Aboriginal people for thousands of years . They left behind a variety of stone traps and køkkenmøddinger made from shells that can still be found all over the island today.

Even today, the survivors of the often brutal land seizure by the Europeans appreciate Goold Island as part of their maritime territory and appreciate it. In December 2005, Goold Island was included in Australia's first Traditional Use of Marine Resource Agreement .

National nature and flora

The 8.23 square kilometer island is mostly covered with light granite rocks and eucalyptus forest. There is rainforest in the narrow valleys and the streams do not carry water all year round. There are sandy beaches around the island. The island is also part of the range of the Victoria Bird of Paradise .

Facilities and access

Campers must bring all equipment and their own drinking water. Permission must be obtained and the number is limited. Watch out for box jellyfish in summer .

The island can be reached by ferry or private boats.

Neighboring islands

The nearby Brook Islands are smaller and consist of North Island, Tween Island, Middle Island, and South Island . The first three are grouped together in Brook Islands National Park and are mainly used as a nesting site for seabirds. These must not be disturbed in their nesting business. Further north is the Family Islands National Park , in the south the much larger Hinchinbrook Island National Park .
