The Bowling Green Bay National Park (English: Bowling Green Bay National Park ) is a national park in the east of the Australian state of Queensland .

Many different habitats are protected in the park, including a. also the wild, forested area around Mount Elliot and Saddle Mountain and the estuaries on the coast between Cape Cleveland and Cape Bowling Green . The park is protected under the Ramsar Convention .

location

It is 1,100 kilometers northwest of Brisbane , 28 kilometers south of Townsville and 59 kilometers north of Ayr .

Terrain forms

The summit of Mount Elliot is 1,342 meters high. There are many streams on its eastern flank, the most significant of which is Alligator Creek . The stream is a popular bathing place. Bird watchers watch the birds drink the stream water and eat the floodplain vegetation.

The park is also home to the Haughton River floodplain, one of the largest wetlands on the east coast of Australia. It was created by the deposition of alluvial material from the coastal rivers in the calm waters of Bowling Green Bay and consists of mud flats , salt marshes, individual hills and mangrove forests . Behind the areas covered with mangrove forest there are pure salt plains . These wide open spaces are characteristic of wetlands in northern Queensland, where comparatively little rainfall and a short rainy season fail to wash away the salt.

fauna

The Brolga Crane and the Magpie Goose find their habitat in the rush swamps of Bowling Green Bay . The park is also the best place to see the rare rock singer . Other bird species there are the whistling goose , the eyebrow duck , the spoonbill , the ibis and the jabiru . Crocodiles can be found in the estuaries and wetlands. Banded tree monitors (Varanus scalaris) and the imposing frilled lizard (Chlamydosaurus kingii) live in the forested areas of the national park .

Facilities

Camping in the park is permitted in the campground on Alligator Creek . Wild camping is allowed at Cape Bowling Green . Open campfires and pets are prohibited in the park.

Driveway

The national park is accessible from the Bruce Highway . The '' Cape Bowling Green '' can be reached via the village of Alva Beach .
