The Piper Islands National Park (CYPAL) (English: Piper Islands National Park (CYPAL) ) is a national park in the northeastern Australian state of Queensland . It is located 1,977 kilometers northeast of Brisbane and 160 kilometers northeast of Weipa in Temple Bay off the east side of the Cape York Peninsula .

It is administered by the local Aborigines together with the Queensland National Park Administration under the status of Cape York Peninsula Aboriginal Land (CYPAL) .

In the vicinity are the Sir Charles Hardy Group , Forbes Islands , Mitirinchi Island , Ma'alpiku Island and Kutini Payamu national parks .

Islands

  • Baird Island (1 ha) - coral island with mangroves (dominated by Rhizophora stylosa and Avicennia marina ) whose treetops reach 5 meters.
  • Beesley Island (2.4 ha) - coral island with grass and herbs, on the same reef as Baird Island.
  • Farmer Island (7 ha) - coral island with grasses and bushes on the beach and a wooded interior dominated by Pisonia grandis with a height of up to 4 meters.
  • Fisher Island (3 ha) - coral island with bushes and mangroves, on the same reef as Fisher Island
  • Kay Islet .

Birds

The islands were of BirdLife International for Important Bird Area declared (IBA) because they exceed 1% of world occurrence of the two-color fruit doves (with up to 4,000 nests) and the Weißkopfnoddis ( Anous minutus , a kind from the family of terns , up to 7,500 nests).

Facilities

There are no paths or other facilities for tourists on the islands. Camping is not permitted. On the grassy side of Farmer Island is an Aboriginal burial place of the Kuuku Ya'u tribe . Keep a respectful distance from this grave site.

Driveway

The islands can only be reached by private or charter boats. Closest landing is the Lockhart River, 60 kilometers south . Since the islands are on platform reefs, it is difficult to moor there with a boat. Only Farmer Island offers an anchorage for ships and is therefore the most visited island in the group.
