The Southern Moreton Bay Islands National Park (English: Southern Moreton Bay Islands National Park ) is a national park in the southeast of the Australian state of Queensland . It is 44 kilometers southeast of Brisbane and ten kilometers northeast of Coomera .

The group consists of four neighboring islands in Moreton Bay between the coast and South Stradbroke Island : Willes Island , Kangaroo Island , Woogoompah Island and Coomera Island . Part of Cobby Cobby Island , a little to the north, is also part of it.

history

Two of the larger islands, Woogoompah Island and Coomera Island , were previously used as pastures. Remnants of that time can still be seen on Woogoompah Island, such as a cistern and a loading ramp for cattle. In the interior of Coomera Island there is a brackish lagoon system that is surrounded by cleared areas.

Flora and fauna

More than half of all mangrove forests in Moreton Bay are located around the five islands . Casuarines also grow on Kangaroo Island .

Fish, jellyfish, dugongs and sea turtles feel particularly at home in the mangroves and the adjacent mudflats . The islands are part of the Moreton Bay and Pumicestone Passage Important Bird Area , which has been designated by BirdLife International because of its habitat for large numbers of migratory, water and beach birds.

Facilities and access

When the tide is low, there is a beach on Cobby Cobby Island that is recommended as a picnic area. A short stretch of beach can also be found on Kangaroo Island at low tide. Camping is allowed on the islands, but not recommended because of the dense mangroves and the many sand flies and mosquitoes.

The islands can only be reached by private boats.
