The Daintree National Park (English Daintree National Park ) in Queensland , Australia comprises two areas: a 170 square kilometer area between the rivers Daintree and Bloomfield and an approximately 565 square kilometer area northwest of the city of Mossman .

location

The park is located around 100 kilometers northwest of Cairns . At 1,375 m, Thornton Peak is the highest mountain in the park; a popular day hike leads to the 770 m high Mt. Sorrow , at the foot of which is the small settlement Cape Tribulation .

In the west, the Mount Lewis , Mount Spurgeon and Mount Windsor national parks immediately follow. To the north are the Cedar Bay and Annan River National Parks .

Flora and fauna

Over 30 percent of all mammal species , 65 percent of Australian bat and butterfly species and 20 percent of bird species live on just 0.01 percent of the Australian land area . From the tall trees of the coast with their lianas , the mangrove forests near the river to the small-leaved vegetation of the mountains, 13 different types of rainforest can be distinguished. 70 animal and 700 plant species are endemic here .

history

In 1983 the controversial Bloomfield Track was laid between Cape Tribulation and the Bloomfield River through the coastal rainforest and attracted international attention to the rescue, which eventually led to a local campaign of building blockades by activists . Although the conservationists ultimately lost the battle for the road, this led to a rethinking of the previously practiced tolerance of commercial logging at the federal level.

As part of the 450-kilometer stretch of coastline Wet Tropics of Queensland between Townsville and Cooktown the park has been one in 1988 for World Natural Heritage of UNESCO . More than 75 percent of the 1200 km² area consists of tropical rainforest and is considered an exceptional example of ecological evolution and biological diversity .

The of Scotland native explorer George Dalrymple (1826-1876) called the National Park to the Australian geologist and photographer Richard Daintree (1832 to 1878).
