The Errk Oykangand National Park (English Errk Oykangand National Park ), until 2009 also Mitchell-Alice Rivers National Park , is an approximately 382 km² national park on the Cape York Peninsula in Queensland , Australia . It is a park that is administered by the Aborigines together with the Queensland National Park Administration under the status of Cape York Peninsula Aboriginal Land (CYPAL) .

location

The park is located in the Far North Queensland region at the confluence of the Mitchell and Alice Rivers . It is located about 335 km west of Cooktown and 270 km northeast of Normanton . Access to the park is only possible by four-wheel drive vehicles from Kowanyama – Pompuraaw Road ; the Mitchell River must be crossed at Shelfo Crossing , a wide rock slab . The park is inaccessible during the rainy season between November and July. In the park there are some Aboriginal cultural sites that are not allowed to be entered.

flora

Located between the Alice and Mitchell Rivers, the Errk-Oykangand National Park protects a landscape full of contrasts. Beautiful, tall eucalyptuses , "Cabbage-tree Palms" ( Livistona australis ) and "Milky Pines" ( Cerbera ) line the fertile river banks of the Mitchell River, while along the Alice River "Bloodwoods" ( Corymbia ), "Cooktown Ironwoods" ( Erythrophleum chlorostachys ) and "Ti-trees" ( Leptospermum ) thrive on sand and clay. Between the two rivers lies a savannah landscape , the ground is hard and cracked during the dry season, and often becomes a huge lake during the wetter months.
