Normanton is a small town in the northwest of the state of Queensland in Australia . It is located about 30 kilometers from the coast of the Gulf of Carpentaria , on the banks of the Norman River . The city has about 1,200 inhabitants, of which 62% are Aboriginal .
Normanton is about 770 kilometers west of Cairns and about 370 kilometers north of Cloncurry . Important connecting roads are the Gulf Developmental Road to the east, which is part of National Highway 1 , and the Burke Developmental Road to the south. The latter is also known as part of the Matilda Highway.
Normanton is the terminus of the "Gulflander", a railway connection between Croydon and Normanton isolated from the rest of the route network. This rail link was built during the gold discovery period in the 1890s. Today the Gulflander only runs once a week.
In July 1957, Krys , the largest crocodile ever shot, was shot dead on the Norman River. It was 8.63 meters long. A life-size replica of the crocodile stands today in memory of this event in Henry Park right next to the building of the Carpentaria Shire Council , whose main town is Normanton.
