history

In 1913 about 12,500 citizens lived in modest prosperity in Memmingen. This had developed through increasing industrialization and was the actual reason for the foundation of the Volksbank eGmbH in the sense of Hermann Schulze-Delitzsch. On July 1, 1913, the new cooperative bank opened its doors in the Zollerhaus on the market square in Memmingen (now Deutsche Bank). The first annual accounts as of December 31, 1913 showed total assets of 267,407.47 marks with an operating surplus of 125.47 marks. At that time the bank had 150 members. In November 1916 the bank acquired the corner building at Maximilianstrasse / Waldhornstrasse, where the main office of VR Bank Memmingen eG is still located today. In the years 1928–29 the construction of the new main office building was built. With the economic boom in the early 1950s, Volksbank grew at an impressive pace. In 1954 the balance sheet total was already 6 million DM. In the 1960s the business base was expanded and in 1965 the first city branch was opened on Buxheimer Straße. In the same year, the bank put the first electronic data processing system based on punched cards into operation - making it a leader at the Memmingen financial institutions. In 1970 the new branch in Amendingen was inaugurated. In the same year the merger with Volksbank Legau took place. Raiffeisenbank Memmingen eG was created in 1971 from a merger of the Raiffeisenbanks Dickenreishausen, Buxheim, Benningen and Memmingerberg. The head office was in Dickenreishausen. In 1973 the head office was relocated to Herrenstrasse in Memmingen. Five years later the large Raiffeisen Center was built on Bodenseestrasse. From then on, the bank's business was directed from here. In the following years the then independent Volksbank or Raiffeisenbank merged with another 14 banks in the area. This included the merger of Volksbank Memmingen eG with Volksbanks in Mindelheim, Bad Wörishofen, Pfaffenhausen, Neugablonz and Kaufbeuren in 1973. The latter two were separated a year later. With the merger of Volksbank Memmingen eG and Raiffeisenbank Boos-Niederrieden eG, a change of name was decided. From this point on, Volksbank Memmingen eG was called Volksbank Memmingen-Unterallgäu eG. In 2001 the time had come for the large space merger between Volksbank Memmingen-Unterallgäu eG and Raiffeisenbank Memmingen eG. The total assets of the new Volksbank-Raiffeisenbank Memmingen-Unterallgäu eG exceeded the billion mark for the first time, at DM 1,047.7 million. 23,959 members were co-owners of the bank. Since 2006 the bank has been trading under the name VR-Bank Memmingen eG.
