Coordinates: 17 ° 44 ′ S , 139 ° 32 ′ E The Shire of Carpentaria is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Queensland . The area is 64,121 km² and has about 2000 inhabitants.

The Shire is located in the north of the state at the southeast end of the Gulf of Carpentaria about 1,640 km northwest of the capital Brisbane .
The largest city and the administrative seat of the LGA is Normanton with around 1100 inhabitants. With about 500 inhabitants, Karumba is the only other larger town in the Shire.
history
After the settlement in Burketown to the west had failed in the meantime, a settlement and the city of Normanton on the Norman River developed in the 1860s. In 1883 the area got a local administration, which was elevated to Shire in 1903.

The Carpentaria Shire Council has five members. The Mayor and four other Councilors are elected by all residents of the Shire. The LGA is not divided into electoral districts.
