Coordinates: 16 ° 55 ′ S , 145 ° 46 ′ E The Cairns Region is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Queensland . The area is 1689 km² and has about 157,000 inhabitants.

The region is located on the state's northeast coast about 1,400 km north of the capital Brisbane .
The LGA is headquartered in downtown Cairns , the largest city in north Queensland with around 134,000 residents. history
Today's Cairns Region emerged in 2008 from the Douglas Shire and the City of Cairns, which had previously been merged with the Mulgrave Shire in 1995.
administration
The Cairns Regional Council has eleven members. Ten Councilors are elected by the residents of the ten divisions (constituencies). The council chairman and mayor (mayor) is also elected by all residents of the region.
