Flora and fauna
Mapleton National Park is located in the Blackall Range, up to 450 meters high . Sub- tropical rainforest grows on the nutrient-rich basalt soils , which arose from volcanic activity 30 million years ago . In contrast, light, high forests thrive on the nutrient-poor rhyolite soils that were formed 235 million years ago. Along with the neighboring Mapleton Falls and Kondalilla National Park , small remnants of the original forest communities have been preserved here. Today they are an important retreat for many plants and animals.
Over 107 different species of birds have been spotted in the park, including the Australian peregrine falcon ( Falco peregrinus macropus ) and the long-tailed fruit pigeon . 70 different species of reptiles and 32 frog species have been counted in the national parks of the Blackall Range, including the critically endangered Mount Glorious Day Frog ( Taudactylus diurnus ), the southern gastric nesting frog ( Rheobatrachus silus ) and the endangered Giant Barred Frog ( Mixophyes iteratus ) .
