Nambour is a city in southeast Queensland in Australia , 101 km north of Brisbane . It is located in the hinterland of the Sunshine Coast at the foot of the Blackall Range . Nambour is the administrative seat of the local administrative area (LGA) Sunshine Coast Regional Council and has around 18,200 inhabitants.
The name of the city comes from the Aboriginal language of naamba , which means "red-flowering tea tree".
history
The region was first settled by Europeans in 1870 under Matthew Caroll . Initially the settlement was called Peetrie's Creek , but in 1891 it was renamed Nambour after a cattle breeding business in the region. The railway connection to Brisbane was also completed in 1891 .
economy
The most important economic factor in the region so far has been the cultivation of sugar cane . Until 2003 there was a mill in the city center that was important for the sugar industry, but sugar cane cultivation in the region is now on the brink due to the closure of the mill.
Lately, more and more exotic fruits have been grown in the region, such as the pineapple , which is particularly popular. The other new economic factor in the region is tourism. Tourist attractions have been built in the area such as The Big Pineapple , a giant pineapple in town, and two other giant structures of the kind.
