Sunshine Coast is the name of a region on the east coast of the Australian state of Queensland . For Australian standards, the Sunshine Coast is densely populated and has 290,645 inhabitants (2005). The largest city with 89,435 inhabitants (2005) is Caloundra .

The Sunshine Coast extends with a length of about 60 kilometers around the 27th southern parallel on the Australian east coast, about 100 kilometers north of Brisbane , the capital of Queensland. The Sunshine Coast Region includes the Local Government Areas (LGAs) Noosa Shire in the north, Maroochy Shire in the center and the City of Caloundra in the south.

The Sunshine Coast is bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the east, the Blackall Range to the west, the city of Gympie to the north, and the city of Caboolture to the south . The region forms a narrow strip of coast along the southern Coral Sea , but lies south of the Great Barrier Reef . Towards the land, the Sunshine Coast is bounded by a low mountain range, which is an extension of the Great Dividing Range .

climate

The subtropical climate is warm all year round, in winter (June to August) the average temperatures are around seven to 22 degrees Celsius, in summer (December to February) 17 to 28 degrees Celsius.

Long sandy beaches, several nature parks, picturesque mountains and the convenient location make the area a center of tourism . From July 2003 to June 2004 there were 2.8 million tourists. Australians accounted for 92 percent of the tourists with 84 percent of the overnight stays. Around every fifth job in the region belongs to tourism.

Direct connections to Sydney , Melbourne and Adelaide are available from Sunshine Coast Airport , ten kilometers north of Maroochydore , with the Australian airlines Jetstar Airways and Virgin Australia and the airline Tiger Airways from Singapore .

Trains of the railway company Queensland Rail take the Nambour and Gympie North railway line up to Brisbane. Bus company Sunbus Sunshine Coast travel the route of Noosa Heads and Tewantin in the north to Caloundra and Landsborough rail station in the south. Ferries operate between Tewantin, Noosaville, Noosa Waters, Northside and Noosa Heads.

education

There is a university in Sippy Downs, the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC). The university only opened its doors in 1996 and is one of the most modern universities in Australia.

The Sunshine Coast Institute of TAFE (SCIT) has campuses in Nambour, Maroochydore, Mooloolaba, Noosa and Caloundra. It is part of Technical and Further Education (TAFE), a network of state institutes.
