The Noosa National Park (English: Noosa National Park ) is a national park in the southeast of the Australian state of Queensland . It is located 121 kilometers north of Brisbane and about 50 kilometers southeast of Gympie between the villages of Noosa Heads and Coolum Beach .

The park is divided into four sections: Headlands , Peregian , Emu Mountain and East Weyba . It is the most popular national park in Queensland and has over a million visitors a year.

Several beaches offer opportunities for swimming. However, the beaches are not monitored. At the south end of Alexandria Bay is an unofficial nudist beach. Climbing, fishing, surfing and diving are other sports that can be practiced in the park. Camping is not permitted.

history

The first settlers in Noosa Heads reserved an area to be protected in 1879. In 1939 the protected area officially became a national park.

In the early 1960s, the Noosa Parks Association was formed to protect the park because the development of the settlement threatened the nature reserve. In October 1999 a management plan for the park was issued.

In 2003, a further 300 hectares were added to the park at Coolum Beach . On May 27, 2008, an elderly woman and her husband were attacked and seriously injured while hiking in the national park. The 26-year-old perpetrator was found incompetent in the subsequent trial.

flora

The Headlands section has rainforest dominated by New Guinea araucarias and kauri trees . There are also areas with sparse eucalyptus forest , wall heather , screw trees and grasslands. The Peregian section is known for its wildflowers that bloom in spring, especially the rare swamp orchid ( Phaius tancarvilleae ) and Blandfordia .

fauna

A population of koalas live in the park, as do other mammals, such as short-nosed butts , common ring-tailed bees and cusus . Birds such as the common parakeet , the brown-headed cockatoo , the gold-bellied flycatcher , the fox-fan tail ( Rhipidura rufifrons ), the silky-arboreal bird and the pennant parakeet can be found in the forests. The park's capes are popular spots for watching humpback whales .

Hiking trails

A boardwalk leads from the mouth of the Noosa River along Hastings Street and around the capes and beaches of the national park to Sunshine Beach .

The highest point in the park is Noosa Hill . A hiking trail leads to the 147 meter high hill. There are a total of five hiking trails, the longest of which is eight kilometers. Another path leads to the Hell's Gate (dt .: Gates of Hell ), a cape in the park. This trail is considered to be the most traveled hiking trail in Queensland.
