The Great Sandy National Park (English Great Sandy National Park ) is a 2210 square kilometer national park in the Australian state of Queensland . It is located 200 to 300 kilometers north of Brisbane between the towns of Noosa Heads and Hervey Bay .

The national park comprises two separate parts: on the one hand, practically the entire island of Fraser Island and a coastal strip called the Cooloola Section on the southern mainland.

Fraser Island

Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world. It is a popular destination for tourists.

As early as 1893 there were first suggestions to create a national park on Fraser Island. On December 3, 1976, Fraser Island was entered as the very first property worthy of protection in the newly created Australian Register of the National Estate . At the same time, the Queensland Minister of Environment announced that he would apply for the island to be inscribed on the World Heritage List . Only when the state government of Queensland decreed an absolute sand mining ban on the entire island in 1991, Fraser Island was included in the list of world cultural heritage by UNESCO as a natural monument.

The approximately 100 km long island east of Hervey Bay was formed from masses of sand collected by water and wind. It is characterized by dunes , colored cliffs , extensive forests and almost 200 freshwater lakes. More than 600 plant and 300 vertebrate species find a livelihood here.

The Cooloola Section is located between the coastal towns of Rainbow Beach in the north and Noosa Heads on the Sunshine Coast east of Gympie . The sand dunes and soils surround salt and fresh water lakes, are crossed by rivers and overgrown by mangroves , rainforests and forests with eucalyptus and banksia . The beaches are around 60 kilometers long. The area is 566 square kilometers. There are hiking trails, various campsites, some of which can only be reached by canoe  , and trails for off-road vehicles that can also be used on the beaches.
