The Smith Islands National Park (English: Smith Islands National Park ) is a national park in the east of the Australian state of Queensland . It is located 862 kilometers northwest of Brisbane and 45 kilometers north of Mackay .
The group consists of sixteen islands south of the Whitsunday Islands and is part of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Site .
The South Cumberland Islands , Newry Islands , Repulse Islands , Lindeman Islands and Brampton Islands national parks are in the vicinity .
Flora and fauna
Most of the islands are covered with light forest made up of low-growing trees.
Wildlife abounds in these forests, and white-bellied sea eagles and osprey roam the islands . Around the islands you can see dugongs and sea turtles as well as humpback whales ( Megaptera novaeangliae ) often in winter .
Facilities and access
There is a campground on Goldsmith Island . It is equipped with toilets and picnic tables.
The islands can only be reached by private or chartered boats.
