The Chillagoe-Mungana-Caves National Park (English: Chillagoe-Mungana Caves National Park ) is a national park in the northeast of the Australian state of Queensland .
The national park consists of five separate parts. These are Royal Arch Cave, Donna Cave, Mungana Archways, Balancing Rock, and Chillagoe Smelters .
location
It is located 1,455 kilometers northwest of Brisbane around the village of Chillagoe .
Terrain forms
The caves are formed in the limestone that was deposited in the Chillagoe area up to 400 million years ago when it was a shallow sea. Over time, the groundwater has washed away caves, in which stalactites and stalagmites later formed.
fauna
Only a few animal species find their habitat in the dark caves, especially bats . But there is also one of only five known nesting sites in Australia for the white-rump salanganese ( Aerodramus spodiophygius ). There are also spotted pythons and various types of insects and spiders.
Skeletons of mammals that fell into the caves and perished there have also been found, including those of the extinct giant kangaroo.
Culture and industry
On the way to the Mungana Archways - 17 kilometers west of Chillagoe - you can see some Aboriginal rock carvings .
The Chillagoe Smelters (ironworks) tell the story of mining in the area. Gold, silver, lead and copper ores were mined and processed here from 1890 to 1930. Mines, tanks and other remains are accessible.
Driveway
Chillagoe is located on Burke Developmental Road , about 215 miles by road from Cairns , inland at the north end of the Atherton Tableland . The road is paved as far as Almaden . The remaining 33 kilometers to Chillagoe and the further 24 kilometers to Mungana are partly unpaved, but are easy to drive on with road vehicles.
Facilities
Camping in the park is not permitted, as is bringing pets. There are several hiking trails of varying degrees of difficulty, picnic areas and also guided tours.
