The States River National Park (English States River National Park ) is a 4,700 square kilometer national park on the Cape York Peninsula in Queensland , Australia . The States River of the same name flows through the park.

location

The park is located in the Far North Queensland region , 320 kilometers west of Cairns and 220 kilometers northeast of Normanton . The Burke Developmental Road runs at a distance of a few kilometers along the northern border of the national park. There are no access roads or visitor facilities in the park.

The national parks Errk-Oykangand , Bulleringa and Chillagoe Mungana Caves are in the vicinity .

environment

One of the largest, almost untouched areas of tropical savannah in Queensland is protected in the States River National Park. The predominant form of vegetation is savanna woodland crossed by ephemeral rivers , with a small number of permanent and semi-permanent waterholes. Few exotic plants and feral pets have been spotted in the park so far.

The States River Important Bird Area includes the area of the national park, because here an important population of over a thousand, the endangered golden-shouldered parakeet ( Psephotus chrysopterygius ) is at home. Domestic pigs, however, destroy the nesting mounds of this parrot species and reduce their food supply. If the number of pigs increases in the park area, they will be culled, as was last done in 2011.

In the park there are also warblers ( Ardeotis australis ), long-tailed tricks ( Burhinus grallarius ), belt-grass finches ( Poephila cincta ), masked amadines ( Poephila personata ), lilies ( Psitteuteles versicolor ) and various types of honey-eaters .
